View Full Version : Anyway to play a hidden file first on a CD after being inserted not being labelled Track1?

Here is a technical question and I am trying to find out first if it
is possible and second how to do it. I need to be able to have a
hidden track on a CD before the first real Track play first but not
listed as an actual track. So it would look like this:

Insert CD in player:
- Hidden track (plays first)
Track 1 - (actual first track of album)
Track 2 - (second track)
Etc.

So you can hear the first track (being hidden) after inserting the CD
but Track 1 is actually labelled Track 1.

Any ideas world?

Yes you put the audio in the pregap before track 1. Not very many cd
burning programs let you do this. I don't know if it is redbook or if it
can cause problems in duplication. I have done it and had no problems.

So what software did you use? I've been unable to do it with MLCD,
Waveburner Pro, or Toast/Jam. I don't think I've tried it with Feurio.

There are a number of commercial CDs that use this technique, so it does
not appear to cause problems in duplication.

CDRWin will do it, so will Exact Audio Copy (EAC). Basically, it can be
done with any program that accepts a cuesheet.

We discussed this here about three years ago. If you read through the
entire thread below, you'll find several ways to do it.

Maybe a really silly suggestion, but could the OP just start listing the
track names on the label/slick starting with the title of track 2 in the
first position? That way all CD players will always play the first track,
just not what the listener was expecting if they were reading the label.

And possibly an even easier suggestion, that will still keep his "track
number" matching on the CD player and the track list on the case;
Simply put the "bonus track" as the first track on the CD, then a pause, and
then the real track one, but don't increment the track number, so there is
actually 2 songs in the space of one. To make it even more obvious, list
the track times on the case, but only include the actual time of the "real"
track one, and then when the CD player plays a longer track than listed,
with a gap in the middle, they'll know they got a "bounus", and not a
"mistake". I would suggest though, that the "real" track one (the one whose
title is listed on the case) be very identifiable with the title. Maybe a
song where the title is featured VERY prominently in the chorus. Otherwise,
people might not realize which song was "supposed" to be there, and which
was the "bonus" track. For instance, if someone were to include a "real"
song in which the title was not easy to hear, then the listener might
mistake the 2nd song (the one whose title is listed) was the bonus, and
might assume the first one (which has the title unlisted) is called whatever
the title of the 2nd song is. Make sense?
Good luck!!
