Quite a few no-name, $10 PCI sound cards do spdif input. Most don't do it
very well though, ie not bit transparent.

The problem I find is that when those $10 show up, nobody can be
bothered to supply specs beyond "5.1" etc. Looks like we might have to
take a hit on a fairly expensive board.

You asked for "cheapest", what do you expect!

Some slight guarantee that it will work at 24/96?
