Second, you define the acoustic equivalent of a synth pad. As in, what
are you talking about?

My SB16 card has the OPL3 FM synth chip with the Creative Music Synth
driver to access the FM chip. Different drivers can make noticeably
different sounds of the same FM synth.

My friend has a Yamaha audio card which uses "Yamaha FM synth" as the
driver to access its OPL3 chip.

From my experience, the Creative Music Synth driver makes better use
of the OPL3 chip than other FM drivers.

OPL3 is stereo. My vocal eliminator seems to freshen up the "cheese"
within the polysynth pads. Vocal eliminator gets rid of the central
channel in any stereo sound. All synth pads -- and even other
instruments in the OPL3 synth -- sound the best:

1. When accessed with the Creative Music Synth driver

and

2. With their central channel removed.

I havent seen a clarification of the original question but I thought he was
asking how to create an actual acoustic event that would sound something like a
synth pad. In otherwords, find some actual real world sound that was similar to
a synth pad. I cant imagine what that would be other than an orchestra.

Plug the output of a synth into an amp and hook the amp to a speaker?

No, this guy is going the other way. Rather than looking for a synthesizer to
imitate an acoustic sound he is looking for an acoustic event that sounds like
a synthesizer.
