Every option has serious drawbacks. It would be much more
cost-effective and less troublesome to simply install a larger number
of low-wattage fixtures that can be controlled in groups. Rather than
dim all the lights, just turn off three fourths of them.

I've seen a few studios done with inexpensive bar room stage lighting
systems... you might want to thumb through one of the catalogs that has a
section on "lighting" and figure out a system.

Check out using a Variac - mains in, variable mains voltage out and its
mechanical not electronic, so no switching noises. A bit cumbersome though.
