View Full Version : Logic Audio (Mac): "XSKey"

I'm currently running Logic Audio 4.2 under MacOS 9.2.2. I think it's time
to move my studio world up to OSX, so upgrade time!

According to http://www.emagic.de/support/download/lpx.php?lang=EN, I can
upgrade to Platinum v6 (I'm not clear yet *from* what version) as long as I
have "an existing XSKey." Do any of you know what an "XSKey" is? I have
the key dangling off my USB port; is that all that constitutes and XSKey,
or is it something different?

The "XS Key" (access key) is a USB dongle (storage device) that holds
Emagic authorizations. One the one hand, it's a pain to keep track of
some little thing that's worth a ****pile of money, and on the other
hand it's a fine thing to install an app on various machines and be able
to move among them with one's dongle.

(Heh heh, he said dongle...)

OK, so that term is no more specific than the key (AKA dongle). For example,
it's not a particular kind of key introduced on version 5.

Gary, take note that he used the plural -- an XSKey (similar to the Pace
iLok used by some other companies) can hold multiple authorizationS on a
single key, which (barring malfunction) is likely to be much more
convenient than carrying around multiple dongles.

My Logic PC 4.x Gold dongle was serial, but I *think* that Emagic only
implemented XSKey authorization with Logic 5.x, and that all prior USB
dongles were simple, single-app devices (which also didn't actually hold
a specific user's authorization in the way XSKey/iLok does).

See the thread 'Logic Audio upgrade help' from a week or so ago, which
discussed the policy on upgrading from 4.x to 6.x:

40posting.google.com

Also, I recall from last year that the version upgrade process from 4 to
5 involved a 30(?) day temporary/dongleless authorization upon
installation, and in the meantime you mailed in your 4.x dongle, and
after receiving it, Emagic mailed an XSKey back to you. Having bought a
full/nonupgrade Platinum 5 package (on clearance after Apple/Emagic
'developments'), I did not go through this process, but I recall that
untimely XSKey shipments was a concern for some that did. Dunno what
the process is like now.

When I upgraded from v4 to v5 I had to return my original v4 CDROM(s).

Didn't that make you nervous? Suppose the app didn't work out as you
hoped... would they give you your old discs back?

OK, that explains it. In short, yes, no, my existing 4.2 key won't work.

Thanks, folks!

I got a USB dongle with version 4.2. My question is whether that key works on
version 6. I recall them calling it simply a "USB key," so the question comes
down to whether an XSKey is a new kind of USB key introduced after version 4.2.

Best I can tell from previous replies, the answer is "yes, it is a new kind of USB
key introduced after version 4.2, notably with version 5."

Yip, I used to have one of those, and before that (notably back in about 1987 or
so), I had a funny cartridge to plug into my ol' Atari ST, back when what became
Logic Audio was called "Notator," which was after they added notation abilities to
their first product called "Creator." Amazing to think back that far...
