View Full Version : G5: Physical Dimensions?

Perhaps a somewhat odd question: Do any of you know the physical
dimensions (height and depth especially) of the new G5 Macs?

I ask because I made a noise-killer box for my G4/500 in the studio, so I'm
wondering if the dual-2GHz G5 critter would fit in that same box.

Thanks, everybody!

In my opinion the G5 is just way too big. It's like the SUV of desktop
computers. Every other manufacturer in the world keeps making their
computers smaller and smaller; and among every other segment of the
Apple brand, they do too. I don't know why they felt the need to build
such a big, ugly monstrosity. What would completely redeem them is if
they built a big TFT display into the side of the case.

Not so much thinking outside the box, as thinking about the box turned
sideways.

I guess for cooling..... lots of hot chips and big fans in the G5.

My noise box has a bit of extra room, but I don't recall how much. I'll check
into it. Thanks for the numbers.

Yeah, look at a picture of the thing opened up... the G5 processor has the most
GIANT heatsink I've ever seen. In a dual-processor G5, about 1/3rd of the box
is processor heatsink. Price you pay for speed.

I recently read a statment from someone who got to play with a G5 that
suggested noise reduction wouldn't be required, that it was quieter than
his Mac laptop. Be interesting to see 'em in the non-virtual.

The Mac I'm lusting after claims just the opposite. I think the
12-inch Powerbook is the sexiest computer I've ever seen.

That would be nice if it's indeed true.

Go on and get one. I replaced my iBook with a refurbished G4 PowerBook.
Getting used to OSX, but everything is working great! This is the 12"
model with the Superdrive. I can't wait to burn my first DVD.
