View Full Version : FYI - Golden Heart using the AT4050

Hi,
I've finished another recording in my Fav project - Mark Knopfler's
Golden Heart. I used the new AT4050 that we discussed in another
thread. I wanted to primarily do an acoustic version of the song, and
I play all the instruments. I created the drum track from the Vitale
collection (Sony) and I pretty much copied the original drum track (as
best as I could).
If you'd like to listen, go to my web site and click on Fav and click
on or Save As Golden Heart. The MP3 is 192 kbps.
Note - the vocal track has not even be de-essed so the AT4050 is
working a lot better for me than the NT1000 did.
Of course, comments/criticisms are welcome.
Thanks for listening.

Listening now. Just one thing, though. You do need a button on your
web site to turn off the background music.

The mic does sound good, but it could do with just a little of the ess
eq'd out of it. 2 or 3 dB would be plenty, I would think. But I can't
think of any mic that wouldn't apply to (apart from my old Grampian
ribbon of course).
As to the performance - good! Just the very slight stiffness you
always end up with when multitracking to a click track. I'm betting it
would loosen up nicely in a performance.

Yes - I still need to de-ess the vocal track.

You are right. I recorded the guitar track a number of times and the
final version was the "best" I could do and I agree that it's a little
stiff in places. As soon as the recording button goes on, I stiffened
up a bit.
Thanks for listening!

The site needs reorganization of its MP3 page. Alphabetical sorting would be
nice.
You could have posted a link that got us to the page with the song with one
click, here it is:

Thanks for the suggestion. Actually I had it organized that way at
one time and didn't like it. I changed it to reflect the order of the
most current releases.

Yes - I could have done that but I figured that if you were
interested, you wouldn't mind clicking twice, otherwise if you weren't
you don't have to go to the site.

Very nice Mike.
It could be my listening environment, but I'm hearing a bit too much
sibilance coming through on the reverb.

That's correct - I haven't removed the siblence yet. I posted the
song here, so people could hear it, but more so because I had a thread
asking about which studio mic to replace my Rode NT1000 mic, which was
really bad at accentuating the siblence. The GH vocal track (and all
the acoustic tracks) was done using the AT4050 and I wanted people to
hear how it handled the siblence in my vocal (which is quite bad).
Thanks again for listening.

Bob - thanks for listening. I don't know about "too perfect" but my
goal was to make a "respectable", acoustic version of the song, and I
certainly never thought that it would come out as good as the
original.

No, can't be. Your voice is your voice and if it sounds like it then it is
OK. Understanding de-essing to be dynamic, do not do it. However the mic is
a bit bright, so you may want to apply a proper static eq. Finding the
"house curve" you want to use as default with the mic is going to be
adaptive, however something like
1 kHz 0 dB
2 kHz -1 dB
4 kHz -2 dB
8 kHz -3 dB
12 kHz -2 dB
16 kHz 0 dB
is - imo - a good first guess.
That said doing it would change the mix, because it is - in my opinion - ok
as it is, except that I would want the flute perhaps a single dB softer,
perhaps 2. Your voice sits nicely in the mix. But do make the experiment, it
is only by testing that you will know what you prefer.
Evaluation done using Sennheiser HD430 and my laptop. I like it aa lot as it
is.
Kind regards
Peter Larsen
