View Full Version : any experience good/bad with TC's new Powercore Firewire ?

I bought one, it didn't work on Nuendo or Logic PC, kept crashing the
computer (nasty crashes). I swapped for another Powercore at the
advice of the TC tech support people, and it still wouldn't work with
Logic PC (now a dinosaur, so I guess I can't blame TC). I got a
couple of good hours with it in Nuendo over the last few days, but now
it started crashing again. I'm just curious to know if this is a
problem for lots of people or only happening to me? The AMD/RME/UAD-1
based computer system is working great otherwise... Anyone have
suggestions for good firewire cards? I've tried two, but get the same
results with both.

I wouldn't be so quick to blame Logic (but I wouldn't drag my feet,
either). What version are you using, Plat 5.5.1?

Which cards did you try? What is the OS, motherboard, and processor?
Have you had any success/failure with other firewire devices on this
machine?

BTW, how were those couple hours?

Yup- using the latest (and last) version of Plat. Logic, and I don't
know why it SHOULDN'T work, except I'm sure Emagic won't be doing
anything to MAKE it work on PC!

It seems there's three of us having problems with TC PC FW on the
Nuendo User Forum- two PC's and a Mac... The PC motherboards and
CPU's are different, and I've tried two types of 1394 interface (TI
and generic). And no one has come up to bat saying their FW PowerCore
is working great, either. I'm guessing it is bleeding edge driver
and/or hardware problems, and hoping they can fix it soon. When it
worked it was great seeing those TC plug-ins I'd grown to rely on in
my old ProTools rig. Plus some nice new ones (to me) too.
Unfortunately, you had better be prepared to turn off your computer
and put your fingers in your ears when you use it, because when it
crashes, it crashes hard and is often painfully loud. And you may
well get a blue screen when you turn your computer back on too.

Norton Ghost can be a very good friend.

Thanks for the warning. I was thinking of buying one of these units, but
it sounds like it would be a good idea if I held off until they get the
bugs out of this product.

I just bought one and installed it yesterday. Needless to say it's not
installed anymore. I had the same issues only with Sonar. Sending it
packing back to the seller tomorrow. UAD-1 here I come.

Total junk.

Maybe I should now.

UAD-1 is great though. I might get another one. I just wanted to go laptop....
