View Full Version : Dent in metal of speaker magnet, is this a problem? (Celestion blue)

There's a dent in the back of the speaker which I assume is the
magnet. Where the label is. Should I return it? I will see how it
sounds anyway. Its a big dent.

Magnets lose force (polarization gets scrambled?) when dropped, usually
losing more or their magnetic "Oompff" in some relative proportion to the
energy of impact. So a dropped magnet can be weaker... A speaker with a
weaker magnet will have diminished magnetic damping and therefore degraded
ability to follow the electrical signal going into it. The excursion for a
given electrical input could also be reduced I'd think, so the output of the
affected speaker could be reduced.

Another idea that comes to mind is the possibility of Internal cracks
occurring, which could adversely affect the spatial or polar pattern of the
magnetic field.

If it sounds okay, maybe don't worry about it? If it were my speaker and
they sounded different, I'd replace the dropped speaker.
