When I power up or power down my Avalon M5 preamp the VU meter needle pegs.
That doesn't seem very good to me but then I worry about world peace,
hurricanes, hair loss, etc. Am I worry needlessly (about the preamp)? I
bought it new a week or two ago and it has done it from day one. Any and all
thoughts appreciated.

Can't say I know the unit, but presume it's old and therefore single supply rail
( usually +Volts ) , as opposed to + and - Volts, and therefore a.c. coupled.

The symptoms you describe are normal for a unit of that type.
