I have an audio file that I captured from youtube. The sound was low,
and I put the track in protools, normalized it to 0db, burned it to
disc, and it's still not any louder. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Been there, done that. The audio quality is usually pretty bad, given that
it has been heavily lossy compressed.

Suggests to me that it was already normalized before you normalized it
again.

There are several basic ways to increase the apparent loudness of audio with
the same peak level.

Raise the level of just the softer parts to raise the average level.

Limit the peaks to raise the average level.

Filter out some of the bass and treble and raise the midrange so that the
energy is concentrated at the frequencies your ear hears the best.

Of course, you can mix and match and really get something that sounds loud,
but not necessarily good.

Turn up the volume on playback.

Just enjoy it. Not everything has to be compressed until it's loud as hell.

There might be a spike or two that clips somewhere, setting the
normalized max. If that's the case, snuff them out and it'll
normalize, um, normally.
