Is it just a coincidence that the Rode M3 looks remarkably like the
AKG C1000S which is roundly reviled as a harsh sounding microphone?
Are they the same mic in different dress? Did Rode get it right?

Holy smokes, it even runs on a 9v just like the C1000.

while never used a M3 , every Rode mic I have used seemed to be worth the
cost and very suitable for pro work

If you have to buy a qualifying mic to get this mic for $1, then the
mic is not really $1

Indeed, I have an NT4 and a pair of NT5 which I have no complaints
about. But I also have some AKG C1000S which aren't very nice.
And that Rode NT3 looks suspiciously like the AKGs.

I don't know how "right" Rode got it, but they're definitely different
microphones.
For a dollar, how can you lose?

I actually like the C1000 as a hi hat mic (with the little
hypercardioid adapter on it). ymmv.

They are not the same mike. I don't think Rode got it right, but I
do think they got it a whole lot more right than AKG did.

RODE got it 'right for the price'. (regular price, not he $1 thing). AKG
got it wrong for any price, but SPMMV.

I was in my local Guitar Center last week and they had the AKG
and the Rode side by side in the glass showcase where one could
take a better look at them.
Despite what Rode or SoS say, except for the paint color, from the
switch forward, the cases (including the annular ring just under the
grille, and the grille itself) are identical. The overall diameter of the
bodies are also identical. And it is an unusual diameter not shared
by any other mics I've ever used. At the very least somebody is
OEMing the case design to both AKG and Rode. But hopefully
not the innards.

They are very similar size and shape, but are not from the same cast, and do
not have the same capsule or electronics. Thankfully.
