Hi,

I have a friend who has a 1950s era hifi turntable. The motor inside
has seemed to have burnt out (we check the belts and they were all
intact). Wanted to know if anyone knows any good repairs shops in NYC
or in the area. They are based out of Jersey City.

Thanks!
Jesse

It would help to know the brand and model of the turntable.

Peace,
Paul

Thanks

Hey guys,

Its a Philco Hifi. Couldn't find a model, but did find a label that
said Part number 78-2097. I snapped some pics if that would be
helpful.

Let me know
Thanks
Jesse

If that's what I think it is, it doesn't have any belt at all. It has
one of those miserable idler drives, with a lot of additional mechanical
crap for the autochanger.

The first thing I am going to warn you is that you should NEVER put any
records that you care about on one of these things. They are record
mutilating devices, and they were when they were new.

The second thing that I will warn you is that nobody likes working on
autochangers. TV repair shops for the most part wouldn't touch them
when they were new because there is so much fiddly crap in there.

Odds are that you just need the thing cleaned and lubricated and that
the idler isn't engaging. The idler probably needs to be replaced
as well since they get old and hard. The first place I would try would
be Waves Antiques in Chelsea. They have a guy who isn't an idiot,
although I warn you that even a cleaning and lube is going to cost more
than one of these things ought to be worth.

In terms of audio, not remotely worth fixing. If it's for a collector, good
luck. Probably the best bet is to find another one and cannibalize it.

Peace,
Paul
