This is interesting. The graphs show that the name "Marilyn" ( a
portmanteau from "Mary Ellen": the first famous Marilyn was actress
Marilyn Miller (1898-1936, born Mary Ellen Reynolds)) was unknown
until just before 1920 and peaked in popularity in the late 1930s. It
was dropping in popularity with a short spike upward around 1953,
consistent with the popularity both of Marilyn Monroe, and also
Marilyn Maxwell. A sharp drop in popularity occurs starting around
1958 or 1959, well before the death of Monroe, and dropping to a
baseline again around 1973.
