View Full Version : Gloating and a question for Jenn

Shhhh! I'm Listening to Reason!
February 20th 09, 10:06 PM
On my way to the airpoort yesterday I saw a little thrift shop. I was
a little early so I stopped in.

I found some LPs in *mint* shape. They were $1/each. I had to repack
my luggage on the fly. :-)

Included:

Everest (orginals from 1958-1960)

Debussy Iberia/ Ravel La Valse, Theodore Bloomfield, Rochester SO
Shostakovich Symphony #4, Boult, LSO
Bartok Concerto for Orchestra, Stokowski, Houston SO
Brahms Symphony #4, Steinberg, Pittsburgh SO

I thought I'd give Everest originals another shot since these
appaeared dead mint.

Brahms Symphony #2, Telefunken, Kielberth, Berlin Philharmonic

I like the Telefunkens I have.

Two original Stereo Vox to try out

DeBussy La Mer/ Ravel Rapsodie Espagnole, Ansermat, London Blueback

Mercisy Living Presence
SR0191 Overtures Francaises Paray DSO
SR90098 Bartok 2nd Suite Dorati, Minneapolis SO

Two original RCA Victrola

And two original Urania.

Here's your question, Jenn: Have you ever listened to a Urania
recording? I haven't but they appear to be made well (nice thick
vinyl, etc) and were in terrific condition. They're pre-1964 as there
is no ZIP code. For $2 I figured what the hell.

Wow! Congrats! Update us, please, after you listen.

I've heard of them; some 50s releases, IIRC? But no, I don't think that
I've ever heard one.

I just finished listening to one of the Urania records, US58008
"Tchaikowsky Symphony no.1 "Winter Dreams", Vienna Philharmusica
Symphony, Hans Swarowsky.

If you get a chance, Jenn, give an old Urania a shot. I found it very
interesting, quiet vinyl, good dynamics, strings and horns having a
natural sound.

I haven't compared it to the original Everests I found in this haul,
but I liked this better than the other ones I've listened to. My
favorites for classical are Mercury Living Presence, Living Stereo and
London Blueback. I felt this recording approached them.

Even considering his esteem as a teacher of conduction (LOL) Swarowsky
is not my favorite conductor. Sometimes his interpretations have
seemed a little rushed to me, in particular a recording of Beethoven's
Pastoral on Audio Fidelity (IIRC it was him, anyway). This recording
did not seemed rushed IMO.

If you get a chance to pick up an original Urania I'd love to hear
your thoughts. I'm not "up" on current prices but I'll bet they're
less expensive than the "recognized" labels.

Great report, thanks. I'll try one out when I can. I'm stopping by the
wonderful The Analog Room in San Jose on the way to a gig this weekend.
I'll look for a copy.
