((Abdul being part of what Sailer describes as "the mercantile minority
immigrant class" which dominates a good swath of Los Angeles trade, she's
probably a pretty sharp operator underneath the ditzy exterior. Bret))
Is Paula Abdul leaving "Idol" or seeking raise?

Is Paula Abdul leaving "American Idol"?
Or is Paula about to get a huge raise to stay? (Ah, the vagaries of show
biz.)
Two Web site reports Friday dueled over Abdul's fate, with MSNBC.com
saying she is "as good as gone," while another at Radar saying Abdul has
"10 million good reasons to re-sign with Fox for a ninth season" - she's
about to embark on the eighth - because she's angling for a $3-million
raise over her current estimated $5-million to $7-million take-home.
The truth? A source close to the show Friday said Abdul was in fact in
the
midst of negotiations for a ninth season, and the likelihood of an
imminent
departure before the eighth (beginning Jan. 13) is considered unlikely.
What's all this about? Anyone who's paid close, or even fleeting,
attention to the tabs and gossip sites knows well. It began with an
emotional Sirius XM satellite radio interview with Barbara Walters on
Monday, in which she blamed producers for allowing her stalker, Paula
Goodspeed, into an audition taping for the fifth season; it culminated
with a David Letterman interview in which the "Late Show" host told her
to
"sue the baboons" (the producers), a suggestion she quietly rebuffed,
saying, "I've still got to do the eighth season."
Goodspeed was found dead in an apparent suicide Nov. 11.
During a press junket for a show he's producing, former "Idol" producer
Nigel Lythgoe told People, "You do not take somebody in that room that
you
believe is a danger to herself or a danger to Paula," but added, "If
Paula
said \, that's what she said, I believe her."
A call to Abdul's publicist was not returned. A spokesman for the show
said he had no comment on either report.
