Several Americans, inspired by Venezuelans, are in the early stages of
mounting efforts in this direction. This truly is inspiring, especially
in these times when arts programs are already being cut, yet again. Art
changes lives for the better. Will we ever learn the lesson that arts
programs in schools helps the dropout rate, and creates more doctors,
financiers, etc? Or will we forever cut that which makes us human?

Your entitled to you're opinion. His Magnificent Dumbness Scottie
Witlessmongrel has taught us the real way to understand the sinkhole you
glibly term "the arts". When the brown hordes start to overrun your schools
and museums, will you be able to fight them off with paintings and
clarinets? No, you won't. The time to prepare for the End Days is now, and
we can't prepare by tootling on flutes and banging on drums. Rather than
throwing away money on pointless repetitions of long-dead music, we should
provide every citizen with enough firearms and ammo to hold on to what's
theirs.
Enough talk about being "human". It's time to start imagining what it would
be like to be dead, and get busy preparing for it. Or something.

What does "mistake" mean in you're whirled? If it means "blunt and obvious
mockery of duh-Scottie", then you've gotten to the bottom of your molecular-

I doubt it, but anyway... The President's Own Band plays "serious"
literature more than they do marches these days: Hindemith, Adams, et
al. They really are a world class ensemble. Clarification: I consider
marches to be "serious literature" as well, but I'm very nerdy in that
area. ;-)

Marines are killers above all. Ask any leatherneck. It's what they learn
from boot camp on. Every other skill is secondary.

While getting into any military band is HIGHLY competitive, I would
wager that the Marines look at infantry as a musician's secondary MOS
(or whatever the Marines call them).
IIRC a divisional band in the Army is expected to guard EPWs when not
playing.

Quite possibly; I can check with some band vet colleagues. But at the
level of the D.C. bands like the President's Own, I would doubt it. I
think that they pretty much rehearse or perform all the time.

No doubt, but I'd be very surprised if they get an exemption from
meeting standards on basic soldier tasks, physical fitness, height/
weight, etc.
Obviously the need for them to perform as infantrymen would mean that
everything else has pretty much fallen apart. :-)

that was not the US MArine Band, t was the San Diego Marine Band
note this: "the band prides itself not only on its excellence in
performance, but in superior execution of its military duties as
well."
http://www.mcrdsd.usmc.mil/Band/index.htm
"Since its founding in 1915, Marine Band San Diego has provided
musical and ceremonial support in a wide variety of commitments
ranging from Hollywood films to Marine Corps change of commands,
public parades to recruiting tours, patriotic convention openings to
recruit graduations.
Marine Band San Diego performs aboard the Marine Corps Recruit Depot
in support of Recruit Training Regiment Graduations and other military
ceremonies. In addition, the band performs at the Pasadena Tournament
of Roses Parade, Holiday Bowl Parade, and at many other venues and
events throughout the Western United States. Performing well over
four hundred commitments annually, the band prides itself not only on
its excellence in performance, but in superior execution of its
military duties as well."
I have a couple of friends who were in the US Air Force Band, Silver
wings ensemble.
they had no military duties at all.

Yep. I once new a guy in the D.C. Army Band (Pershing's Own). He had
to take periodic training.

My personal favorite is The National Emblem.
I recall being in a parade as an enlisted guy. Our formation was
directly in front of the US Army Band who were marching behind us. We
had a guy calling cadence who was *exactly* out-of-step with the band.
I remember thinking "I'll probably never get to march with these guys
again. I wish that donkey calling cadence would PLEASE shut up."
We formed up in an area where a lot of gays lived. The catcalls from
the surrounding apartments (Yoo hoo! Soldier boy! Up here! Come have
some fun when you're done!) were pretty funny.

Perhaps the most musically perfect of them all, IMO.

Military Occupational Specialty. The alpha-numeric job code. When I
was enlisted, I was a 13F (forward artillery observer).
Everybody in the US Army has a secondary MOS of 11B (infantrymen).

soup is spewing out onto your keyboard.
Turns out there is an Army job for Scottie after all:

I wonder how 2pid would fare:
**********
Practical Exam Requirements
Content Area Skill Requirements Applicable MOS 31B Experience
Obedience Basic obedience (both voice and hand); Heeling control (on
and off lead); Distance phase (voice commands at a distance); Walking
phase (voice commands while walking); Socialization phase (on and off
lead); Obedience under gunfire Training to maintain proficiency of
assigned Military Working Dog in obedience, obedience course, and
control under gunfire.
Area Search Search for a hidden suspect within a large outside area
Training to maintain proficiency of assigned Military Working Dog in
scouting
Article Search Search a designated area for an article bearing fresh
human scent
Tracking Track an unknown subject in an unfamiliar area
Building Search Detect, indicate and apprehend, if necessary, a
suspect or suspects hidden in a building Training to maintain
proficiency of assigned Military Working Dog in building search.
Controlled Aggression and Criminal Apprehension Perform criminal
apprehension and controlled aggressiveness Training to maintain
proficiency of assigned Military Working Dog in controlled
aggression.
Note: The purpose of all the tests is to determine the dog s ability
and proficiency, and the handler s control of the dog.
**********
The controlled aggression portion may sink him if the obediance
portion doesn't. He wouldn't even make a good working dog, let alone a
military leader. LoL.
