One of my partners is lucky enough to be able to get some Beyerdynamic gear
at near cost. Can anyone with any recommendations about these mics (models,
uses, price/performance, whatever) be kind enough to share their
experiences. All I've had the opportunity to use from their line is the 58
type dynamic. From browsing their website the following appeared of
interest:
MC930
MC834
MCE530
MCE90
M160
M260.80
M422TG
OPUS 51
OPUS 65
OPUS 67
thanks for your time,
Ken

Someone told me that the Beyer MC740 had the same capsule as a C12. He could
have been wrong, or maybe he was right.

I can't say if it's the same or not but it does have a brass ring. The
MC740 is an interesting mic. I love the mic but many seem to hate it
for some reason. I guess they are looking for an all purpose wonder
mic.

I have some of their ribbon mics and found them very useful. The m160 in
general, sometimes the m260 and m500.

I've heard very good things about the m88 dynamic. I'd like to get one myself
so if you can get extra, i'd be interested in buying one.

I love Beyer Dynamic mics. The MC740 is a very good mic, with a bit more
of a high end rise then most Beyer mics are known for. The cardiod only version
is the MC 834 IIRC.

Besides the popular ribbon Beyers (M160,M130, M260), I really like my/the
M69 and I have this old discontinued M320 ribbon which is a great sounding mic
in a plastic! shell... The M88 is a very nice mic you should check out as well.

IME the new M201TG is just as good as the M201 was. I loved my early
'80s M88s but I hear the new M88TG doesn't sound the same.

Chris,

Not that I'm doubting you, but it's rare that a dynamic hypercardioid mic
positioned for vocals, brass and kick drum (beyer's words not mine) will out
do a U 87 i or U 78 ai in the studio.

You must have quite an unusual voice, and/or were in a pretty lively
acoutical environment.

That's why the M88 and the M69 are nice mics to check out. I have often
thought my old school U87, Beyer M69 (also a dynamic hypercardiod) or Neumann
KMS84i could be used on a vocal track interchangibly depending on the singer
(not that they all have the same sonic signature, just that thet're all great
sounding mics with the right micpre.) The Sennheiser MD441 and MD431 are quite
nice dynamic hypercardiod's too.

Not that I'm a Ty Ford or anything.... <g>

All I can say for fear of blowing it for my partner (and me) is that
anything we buy and don't use will be offered here first at a great price.
I do really appreciate the input as we will not be able to audition the mics
before purchasing them. And no they did not fall off of a truck, but to
quote my partner 'only suckers pay retail.' I guess I've been a sucker most
of my life :)

OK. Next time we have an M88TG and need a vocal track, we'll call on
you.

I have never used anything from Beyer that I didn't like for something.
Although the new M-88 isn't anywhere near as good as the old one, it's still
not a bad mike at all. Same goes for the 260.

Get some 160s and 130s. You'll want them for something someday.

Stephen Paul has told me that it is more like the capsule on the

Mike, be careful what you wish for! <g>

Apologies to you, Will, and Ty, for not noticing your respective responses until
now.

Should note that the informal shootout was done without using any EQ of any
kind on either the U87ai or M88TG, only (fairly decent) microphone placement.
Maybe it's just that at this early point of the learning curve, the M88TG has a
"sound" that is attractive.

Ty, my voice isn't all that "unusual" BTW, it has a similar tone to singers like
Buddy Holly and Rick Nelson (although I sing/listen to a wide variety of music)

Chris

P.S. "DB", IYO, has the M88 worked well on as many singers as the MD421 in
your experience? (I know you think well of the 421)
