Heheheh.........depends on which part of planet Colorado you inhabit. I live
in Durango. Big tourist town trapped between the desert and 13000 ft.
mountains. There are probably 2 grunge bands, 2 blues bands, 5 country
bands, a few singer/songwriter acts, a couple of jazz trios, a few native
american fusion/rock tribal bands and 98208726292675 bluegrass pickers
around here, with some of the damndest pickers I've ever heard. Most of the
club acts are imported from Austin during the tourist season. Just about all
I record any more are bluegrass bands and singer/songwriter demo's. The
closest city of any size is Farmington, New Mexico, then Albuquerque or
Santa Fe. If you're going to try to make a living at music in Colorado, you
might want to go to the eastern slope-al la Boulder.

Yup, Boulder is fun. I only wish I had lived there when I was still
single ;)

I used to live in Boulder (13 yr.). There was once quite a scene in
the late 70's when a live-in studio existed outside of Boulder called
Caribou Ranch. A lot of million seller "albums" including Elton John,
Chicago, Supertramp, Joe Walsh, Dan Fogelberg were all recorded at
Caribou. It was owned by Jim Guercio, nice Italian boy who did many
things in the music biz (including creating the CMT country music TV
network) When Caribou fell on hard times, it conveniently,
accidentally, burned to the ground. Don't know what it is now. There
was also a big group called Firefall that came out of that era in
Boulder.

Boulder has always had a vibrant (albeit somewhat experimental) music
scene because of CU. Several cool groups, The Subdudes (originally
from Louisianna), The Samples, Big Head Todd and the Monsters all
emerged after the 70's. None of them ever really made it into the big
big bucks. Also, a fairly progressive rock band named "Winger" got
fairly well known. It's always been tough to get the label backing
that bands in L.A. or N.Y. can get because of their proximity to the
label. It's a long drive to the next major music market from there.

Check the websites for "Colorado Sound" and "Coupe" recording studios,
a couple of longstanding institutions with quality people from that
area. Also check www.chrisdaniels.com. He's been there since the 70's
and still has a very active unusually formatted horn band that plays
the area regularly. His management company is Garvan Management,
.

You might be the next big thing there. It's a great place to live but
hard to make yourself into a really big thing if your based out of
there.

I, however, have made a much better living after I moved to Nashville.

There's action here (Denver) if you're looking for it...but it's not
Sunset strip by any means (which is most likely a good thing).

Check out www.newcomershome.com

They're a very talented local act that has sold somehwere around 8,000
CD's locally and nationally. I played bass with them for a year (I'm
no longer with them) and I'm currently producing/engineering Katie's
first solo album (she's the lead singer/songwriter). Samples of that
should be up on their website by end of summer.

Thanks Guys,
I was going to send all of you individually a private email but I felt
funny doing that and figure I'd get the real reason I'm asking this
out in the open.

Part of the reason I posted was My nephew (17) ran away to Colorado.

http://www.tigermastering.com/John.htm

He's doing this to be famous? (not sure) peer pressure, (other kids
having thier own thing where he couldn't) plus I think he had problems
with his mom and stepfather. (guess He got a couple tattoos that his
mother just found out about and didn't approve, and then he left.
(Or something of that nature), BTW: I'm his blood uncle.

Anyways,if you see him let the authorities know, or talk some sense
into him please. He's into the music scene and Skateboarding. He just
up and left, met a girl on internet. He's there now supposidly working
for a band. (or in a house band possibly : plays guitar/sings)

Again, I am truly sorry to impose on you like this. Our family is very
worried for his safety.

and apparently, HE DID IT ALL FOR THE NOOKIE! lol

Sounds like a normal 17 year old to me. Glad he surfaced though. There are
some mighty evil critters lurking around in the shadows these days. I
remember hitchiking all over the country back in the 60's and didn't meet
one single wierdo until I got to LA.

;-)

Ha!, he just got his septum pierced....uh oh. But yet, he goes to line
dances....thats cool, he's open to new things. He said, "The girl
means more to me than anything in the world". This is extremely BAD
for any musician starting out. bye bye dreams,...hello new family.

Guess some gotta learn the hard way...no pun intended. but then again,
one day it may be her, next day it's somebody/something else. Hope he
is smart enough to be smart enough not to knock her up. Damn, am I
getting old or what?

Cracks me up, one thing he said to me was, "please tell dad NOT to
worry, im gonna be 18 yrs old, im totlaly fine".

Yea, in 11 months!!
I tell his father to try and remain cool, not to act too old. (lol) I
Guess it's tough sometimes to be cool AND be a parent. In this
situation anyway.(w/girls involved)
