hey
anyone got any tips on micing up a large, quite bassy djembe.
We've taped a 58 to the inside before which has worked quite well but not
amazing.
We've got some random clip on mics, some 58s, 57s and a few ATM33 condensors

Having just finished a tour that featured a Djumbe as its only percussion,
here is my observation
If this is for LIVE reinforcment
the Audix D-series works very well
a D-2 on top and a D-4 on the bottom alternatly a shure beta 91a is also
good for bottom and it lays flat on the floor(no stand needed)

mics inside hand-drums usually sound like crap! And if it's for
live it MUCH worse. The bass resonance of the drum makes
a tuned chamber that is positively amazing at creating bass
feedback notes! The boundary mic near the bottom works MUCH
better as it doesn't have the feedback thing.
A mic inside the drum can work if it's close to the head and
suspended in the middle of the drum. For a Djembe, I'd
strongly recommend a contact pickup! Go to the "Pick-up the world"
website and check 'em out. They work great. (See my website
www.drbengenius.com for photos of mine) They are piezo and need
a high (10 megohms) input amp. The contact mic mixed with an inside
the drum mic does wonders for congas too. PUTW sells Hi Z preamps
too.
Since a djembe is a dancing drum, it's often not practical to
mic except with a mic attached to the drum in some way often
wireless.
Good luck.
