Hi. Does anyone have suggestions for a nice mic preamp? I'm using the rode
nt-4 and need something transparent, or at least with a pleasant coloration.
I'm loking to spend no more than $300 if i can.
Thanks,
Mike

The clear winner would be the Sound Devices line of products (also rebranded
for Shure in some cases).
www.sounddevices.com
The MixPre is a 2 channel version that sells for around $600 USD and has
built in phantom powering for the Rode NT4 as well as a limiter and very
clean sound.
The 302 is a more advanced unit with many more features including 3 inputs,
Mid/Side Matrix, and T power as well as phantom and sells for $1050 USD.
The USB Pre sells for around $700 USD and has direct digital USB interface
for those sending the signal to a laptop for HD recording.

I just realized you stated UNDER $300 so I will ammend my previous reply.
I think that for around $300 USD you can get a used MixPre unit which by the
way works off AA batteries.

The Sound Devices MP-1 one channel preamp lists for $420.

The MP-1 is not a good option for the poster as his mic is a Rode NT-4 which
is a dual element stereo mic....
I still suggested a used MixPre.

No, not really.
You could look at the Cooper or Beyer boxes, but they're beyond your budget.
