Hi. I need to do some field recording, and need a portable recording
device. DAT is out of the question. (Expensive) The sound quality must be CD
quality, or VERY close. Does the Creative Nomad Jukebox have a good mic
pre-amp? I'm also considering a portable MiniDisc recorder. Thanks im
advance.

I'm not sure about the Nomad set-up and MiniDisc will be compressed so if you
must have 44.1k try a stand alone digital recorder. Most all of them are quite
good for what they sell for, I have a Fostex MR8. It's screen is a bit hard to
read and it has no juice for a condenser but I'm happy with the sound of it's
pre's.

No. It has (with the newest firmware release) a digital level control
which can "add" some 50 dB of "gain" but that gain comes at the expense
of noise floor.
You need an external preamp and possibly A/D converter if you want to do
high quality recording on the NJB3. Search http://groups.google.com/
for recent discussion here.

AFAIK, none at all. The spec sheet says line input.
Here's some preamps that might match up:

No. It has only a "virtual" mic preamp. In order to do justice to a
mic as good as the NT-4 (not an endorsement of the mic from here, just
a summary based on others' opinions) you'll need to spend at leaset as
much on an external mic preamp as you do on the Jukebox, maybe on the
Jukebox and mic combined.

Same goes for a MiniDisk recorder, but at least they have a mic
preamplifier stage, not just a line input followed by 40 dB of gain.
Save your money until you can afford what you need, or set your sights
a little lower (by defining "CD quality") to suit what you can afford.

CL's specs say that the Nomad 3 will record and play back uncompressed .wav
files. It has both Toslink and line-level analog I/O.
