How does one achieve that great compressed crash sound the can be heard
in Wilco¹s "How To Fight Loneliness", or many Beatles songs?

Thanks a bunch, -Mick

Don't know about the Wilco track but Geoff Emerick explained this in an
interview a year or two ago (I think it was in EQ?).

Something like this: Fairchild 660 or 670 on the mono drum mix squeezing
hard when the bass drum hits and releasing soon thereafter making the
crash swoosh up in volume on it's decay.

If you wnat that sounds you need the Chandler TG-1. It' a recreation of
the EMI TG series compressor and is really amazing. It has a different
pumping/breathing quality than any other compressor I've ever hear and
that's why those sounds are like that. Try it on Limit with a recovery of
4 or so.
