If you were recording digitally, would you get a...

A) Distressor: (versatile, classic comp emulations, tape saturation stuff)

B) LA2A and 1176: (proven track record, no tape saturation stuff)

Pop / Rock / Blues music

I really like 1176's on just about everything.

if you're very proficient with compressors, get the distressor. the
tweaks i know who love them have spent years using 1176's, la2a's,
la3a's, 2264's, etc. and know how to get exactly what they want from
them. if you are less experienced, i would go for the la2a and 1176.
they sound great, are easier to use, retain their resale value, and
have more applications than you might first realize. for tape
saturation effects the fatso is easier to use than a distressor --
although not a full fledged compressor.

1176. Much as I like the distressor, none of the emulation stuff
does anything than add annoying distortion that in no way resembles
tape saturation or tube colouration. Having the opto mode is useful,
though.

I'll take B, if I can't have a pair of Cranesong Trakkers or an STC8.

You betcha Hank. Love them Trakkers <BG>. Also like my Peavey VC/L-2 tube
opto compressor. Not better - just different. Dave Martin got me onto them.

I'll agree to that. Let's hear it for HD sampling rates.
