Tower is gone. Virgin is gone or on the way out, depending on your
location. What percentage of your music (in whatever format) buying
would you estimate takes place in brick and mortar stores these days?

16% CD's borrowed from friends to copy and, errr, evaluate before purchase..

Hey Boon,

We just got back from Portland (had an *amazing* time) and I noticed
that Music Millenium on 23rd had just closed its doors :-(

I was looking forward to spending some time there, too! I can't complain
much because I did very well at Everday Music and found a couple things
of interest at Jackpot Records, but I was pretty disappointed about 23rd
Ave. Still, we managed a nice lunch at Papa Hayden's so all was not
lost!

Anyway, to answer the original question, I probably do about 80% in
brick and morter and 20% on-line, split between Amazon (for CDs) and
Adagio Plus (vinyl).

Close to zero. I obtain my recorded music the best way - I make it.

The one I know is on Burnside. Did you try there?

Isn't that Everyday Music or am I mixing the two up? I could very well
be confused.

In any case the store on Burnside (near about 14th or so) is still
around and loaded with new and used vinyl!

Yes, that Millenium, with Classical Milenium next door. Whew! Glad
it's still there for me this summer! ;-)

That whole Mahler series is just fantastic, musically and sonically.

A wee bit of research has shown me that we are talking about different
locations. It's all very confusing because both Everyday Music and Music
Millenium are on Burnside, just in different parts of town.

Everyday Music is close to downtown on Burnside (1313 W. Burnside) while
Millenium and Classical Millenium are on East Burnside (3158 E
Burnside).

MM did have another store in the Northwest district (on 23rd) that I
discovered had closed. As far as I know the Burnside locations are safe!

I see. Yes, according to the website, MM and CM on E. Burnside are
still alive and kicking. Truly two of the best stores still standing,

Presently it is still close to 100%. I never buy music on the net or
download music. I also buy my music from the artist himself at the
concert if available.

In my case, about 90%. The 10% is for things I can't find locally or
eBay purchases.

Another option is that GOIA illegally records other groups.

I wonder where I can pick up a copy of something GOIA recorded. I'd
like to see how it sounds. Have you ever released anything
commercially, GOIA?

You didn't go the other one on 32nd and Burnside? Terry Currier, the
owner, told me that the one on 23rd wasn't makinga profit, and it was
starting to affect the larger store. So he cut his losses. As a
result, the remaining store is incredible busy now.

I saw him call it "the best". I'd like a chance to verify his claim.

There was no abuse involved. I'd imagine that someone with GOIA's vast
recording experience would have something I could pick up on Amazon,
that's all.

I've asked Arny for an example of his recordings, for curiosity, and
because I'm starting to get into recording. He said that he wouldn't
due to not having permission to share the recordings (in the case of the
festival contests he records), and due to copyright (IIRC) (in the case
of his church music). From my experience, there would be no problem
with copyright issues, but anyway, it didn't work out.

Fact is Jenn, your obsessive patterns of behavior strongly suggest that were
you to actually hear one of my recordings, you would suffer a meltdown of
hypercriticality. Fact is, I do very pragmatic work. I mostly hastily record
young amateurs in questionable acoustical environments. A lot of it is not
even pretty to some of the adoring parents of many of the performers.

This level of "humor" could easily be attributed to someone else here,

It may be the best (cheapest) way to oibtain music,
but I wonder if it is the best music? Probably not:-)

One should also listen constantly to other
people's work. That's what professionals do:-)

Even the best of us has so much to learn.
Buy some Russian or Czech recordings, Arny.
I think you will be very pleasantly surprised
by the quality of both orchestral and choral
performance and recording.

Last time I visited one of my clients in Sweden
(who is a world authority on Mozart) he was
listening intently to Pink Floyd, and making notes.
Later, at dinner, one of the topics we discussed
was the merit of "delay on the reverb" as opposed
to "reverb on the delay" Think it through, Arny. I
wonder what Mozart would have thought:-)

Best regards
Iain

Hmm. Interesting question:-)
About 50% of my new aquisitions are pre-release or review
copies. 20% come from bricks and mortar stores (I know
the owner and so get a generous discount) The rest come
from on-line ordering (vinyl from Elusive in the US for example)
I have no illegal copies, neither do I bother with .mp3 dowloads

Iain you're the first one to mention MP3 downloads. I will quite often
download an MP3 of an album to see if I like it before I buy it on line. I
use it as a way to demo the album before purchase and if I then buy it I
delete the download and if I don't buy it (because I don't like it) I still
delete the download.

BTW I buy most of my vinyl online, 100% of SACD/DVD-A online and 50/50 CDs
online or in stores. The only reason for the store buying is I love to
rummage through the bargain bins ;-) e.g Recently I picked up a couple of
Syd Barrett (RIP) CDs for approx. US$3.00 each

Cheers TT
