I'm looking to buy some nice floor speakers to complement mt mid
level stereo system.
I currently have a nice Yamaha receiver and a cd player but mediocre
(cheap) onkyo speakers.
I would like to get nicer set of floor speakers but don't have a ton
of money to spend .....
$600 max

any suggestions?

An excellent suggestion, IMO, IF you have a room that allows for them.
You might also go used to be able to afford the most bang for the
buck...something like a used pair of Vandersteens.

Good luck! Better speakers should make your system sound a lot better.

Earlier Marc suggested Aperion - that's still good advice:

http://www.aperionaudio.com/catalog/Tower,28.aspx

Otherwise, you couldn't go wrong with Paradigm, Boston Acoustics or NHT.

One thing you might consider: if you opt for smaller monitors over floor
standing speakers you can get a higher quality speaker (sacrificing bass
extension in the process of course).

I did suggest Aperion the first time around. Since the drivers, basic
enclosure construction and crossovers are the same throughout the
line, with the differences only being enclosure size and number of
drivers, the overall sonic signature is pretty much the same. Just
choose the model that fits your budget and give it a listen. Aperion
ships directly to your house for free, gives you 30 days to make up
your mind, and pays for return shipping if you don't like them. It
couldn't be easier. I reviewed the Intimus 532s and thought they were
excellent for the money ($750/pair).

Boon

I've had big Maggies (Tympanis) in rooms both large and small. Undoubtedly
larger spaces allow for those speakers to 'bloom'. However in smaller spaces
have some pluses, the sound being comparable to wearing a good Stax
"ear-speaker", being very analytical and capable of resolving small details
often buried when in larger open spaces. (I could easily enjoy the tiny MMGs
in one of my walk-in closets.)

Are there (m)any speakers which aren't sensitive to room placement?
Implied in the Stax 'ear-speaker' analogy, the MMG isn't that VERY sensitive
to room placement.
(I presently own and use a MMG, 3.6R and Tympani IVa, in different rooms.
Some people even enjoy using the MMGs in a "near-field" configuration,
however I don't use them that way.)
