Header says it all!
Please note: There are some people in the World that really have very little
interest in US internal politics.
BTW Arny please keep quiet. Yes I know all amplifiers sound the same, CD is
perfect and the World's best CD player is the Sony CDP101 and I'm a kook for
playing vinyl and your opinion of me is very low ;-) Sigh............

That attitude got RAO where it is. Stop whining about the consequences of
behavior that you cherish.

Yes, TT: GOIA was about to talk about the last time he got emotionally-
involved with music reproduced on a turntable and ****. Now you've cut
him off. ;-)

aus.hifi was pretty dead for a while, but seems to be coming back.

The Krooborg reminisces about one of its favorite ass-whuppings.

Indeed. They did a good job of "humiliating" you a couple weeks ago,
Turdy. You're still dragging the shame of that "defeat" around with you
like toilet paper on your shoe.

Whatever you try to "discuss" with Witlessmongrel, be warned -- one of two
outcomes will befall you. The first possibility is that within a few
posts, you'll find you're "discussing" with a moron (or imbecile, as
another RAO regular calls him). The second is you'll run into one of
Scottie's many hangups about "tests" and "morality".
Either way, you'll get disgusted. I advise you not to go down this path.

The other day you complained about people starting "attack threads" with
your name in the subject. This is what regular people understand as
hypocrisy.
As far as your notion of "discussion", I would suppress your participation
if I could. However, the best I can do is warn regular people about the
futility of engaging you. Once again, you've misused a common word. How
does it feel to be the dumbest kid in class?

How many of those who tolerate the Middiot are the Middiot's sockpuppets?

It is all that George is capable of. I've seen those few tiny occasions
where George tried to be serious and about audio. There was nothing wrong
with it, but it was obviously nothing that he was comfortable with. Frankly,
it was OK, but mediocre.
George wants to excel in everything that he does, but all he can do is act
like an a-hole. So he does that. :-(

All of them, of course. And they're all your "enemies", and they're all in

can't appreciate because they're half deaf.

1. I've read about using one of those Mr. Clean Magic Erasers to brush
one's stylus. Anyone here ever try that?
2. Three great record finds today at our local store:
The Weavers Reunion at Carnegie Hall Part 2 on Vanguard reissue
Belefonte Returns to Carnegie - RCA with Odetta, Chad Mitchell Trio
Khachaturian Masquerade Suite, etc on RCA
Between the 3 records: 2 little pops. Great finds.

Jenn with I believe it is 100,000's of posts over more than a decade, I've
done just about anything and everything except use profanity with any
frequency.
So, observing that once upon a time I ranted about an attack thread is
excruciatingly trivial. But that is you Jenn - excruciatingly trivial. It
comes with your desire to emulate the Middiot who is the most trivial of all
but maybe Art and ****R.
> with his name in it. He hated that,
Not at all. The best thread I ever trolled into existance was titled
something like "Have you had a bad krueger experience?". I fanned that fire
into nearly 1,000 posts in 24 hours. Maybe it was more than 1,000 posts.
Just call me the Pied Piper of Usenet. ;-)

Certainly, that's well documented. And not just with you -- same thing
with many of the Krooborg's "enemies". Including me, naturally, until the

Uh-oh. Yet another common term Scottie doesn't understand. FYI, mental
midget, "BS" is short for "bull****", and it means blarney or other bushwa
that is intended to mislead or deceive. As you will no doubt fail to
grasp, such an accusation is completely irrelevant to my participation on
RAO.

You've got a couple of classics there...both the Weavers Reunion Part 2 and
Belefonte Returns... are classics both for sound and content.
Don't know about that specific Khachaturian Masquerade, but it is an
exciting piece and if the RCA is up to snuff, probably sounds excellent.

So, GOIA, sice this started out as a plea for audio discussion, and
you've gratuitously thrown my name in, what's the best turntable/arm/
cartridge IYO?

Or maybe many, many people have had a bad GOIA experience. There'e
always that possibility. ;-)

Do you prefer simple box speakers, dipoles, bipoles, line-arrays, or
what? What is the best-sounding speaker you've ever heard? What was
driving them?
Do you think PP triodes sound better than PP pentodes? I do.

That's not very 'christian' of you:

Everybody on RAO is George's sockpuppet. Even JA admitted that he was.
Did you have to change the recommended load on the best cartridge you

lol Thanks for your opinion.
So let's sort this out: You believe that because I don't spend my time
chastising George, I am a bird with his feathers, and my actions with
Arny imply there is nothing wrong with George's actions.
Based on that, you are a bird with Arny's feathers, and your actions

Indeed. All sound really great, especially Harry.

No, Kondrashin and the "RCA Symphony". As I recall, this was an ad hoc
group of players from the NYPhil, NBC Symphony, the Met, etc. Sounds
really good. The record is a Layton/Mohr production; fine sound.

He's as "afraid" of GOIA as he is of you. Why do you always assume
"fear" in someone else, 2pid? Jenn and Stephen are afraid of something
(but you won't say what) and now I'm afraid of GOIA.

'Crying' to 2pid is what one does when one is 'afraid'. Since you are
'afraid' of something (and nobody but 2pid knows what), you must be
'crying'.

I don't think it was a troll. I think GOIA heard *three* little pops,
all the way from Michigan.
That's pretty impressive!
They were both Living Stereo, I presume? I have the orginal Belafonte
on LS and the "Return" concert on a Mobile Fidelity CD. It's great

Yes it is. I have the original Harry LS, on a less pristine copy. An

Mobile Fidelity... Haven't heard that label mentioned in quite some
time. I had a number of recordings from them years ago. Including a Dave
Grusin and several Lincoln Mayorga (w/Amanda McBroom IIRC). Sadly let
them go to help pay for college a few years ago.

YES! Thank you Jenn.
Long-lost titles I once had and would kill to recover:
Harry James: Still Harry After All These Years, Coming From A Good
Place.
Amanda McBroom: Growing Up in Hollywood Town
Thelma Houston: I've got the music in me
Lincoln Mayorga: The Missing Linc
Dave Grusin: Discovered Again
Thanks for the refresher and the trip down memory lane. TIme to check
out eBay as I doubt any of these titles would be found in a used record
store here in PDX.

Great records. Ebay can be a great source, but there are others. Just
search on The Google. You might also try a call to Stereo Unlimited in
San Diego. They have A LOT of those records at decent prices. I don't
know if they do mail order, but it might be worth a try!
Have fun!

I have to agree with Scottie here. You are fully aware of his learning
disabilities, his reading comprehension problem, his Asperger's, and his
low IQ. How can you reasonably expect Scottie to learn something like this
after a mere 20 or so repetitions? Your expectations for Scottie's
performance metrics are way out of line, Jenn.

I have King James Version and a Prokofiev/Leinsdorf from Sheffield.
Their catalog was a bit thin IMO, but they do sound good.

A friend of mine played clarinet and contracted "Growing Up in Hollywood
Town". He said that all involved (Mayorga, Sax, et al) were great folks.
Yes, their catalogue was limited (they were a very small company located
in Santa Barbara), but they made GREAT sounding records, IMO. The only
one I never warmed up to was the set recorded in Russia.

Now this has sparked my interest ;-) May I ask why you dislike *all*
Japanese DD turntables?
I personally use Technics SL1200 MK2s (I have three and I'm not a DJ) 1
totally standard, 1 I have modified the wiring on to be balanced XLR cable
and painted pretty and the third is an ongoing project where I am fitting my
own design and constructed 450mm tone arm and gimbal. Then, if I am a good
enough machinist I will attempt a tangential design I am formulating.
IMHO the SL1200 is an excellent value for money machine, with excellent
performance. The plinth is well damped and the motor speed is always exact
although the tone arm and especially the gimbal could be better (hence my
project).
So Brett what do you do with all this "junk" you collect?

Hi Joe, was that volume 1, 2 or 3? I have 2 & 3 and 2 is currently the most
expensive LP I have ever bought. Last year for a new, sealed and unplayed
copy I paid US$125 + freight to Australia. BTW that was beating them down a
lot as well ;-) 2 is very well sort after and is very difficult to find so
the moral to the story would, hang on to your old stuff :-)
These direct to disc recordings fascinate me how they are done and what they
sound like. It is shame there is a little bit too much surface noise on
each :-( The joys of vinyl I am afraid.

I do hear this a lot :-(

IMHO it has more to do with manufactures not wishing to pay Panasonic the
royalties to use their DD system and then discrediting it. *IF* Linn or
Gerard came out with the same ststem would there still be this perception?

A relatively recent direct to disc recording is "Carlotta and Friends - Live
in Studio" on the cna:music label. I have seen a few LPs appear for sale
on the Internet with the CD chucked in. Being a relatively new recording
(1999), one might hope the cutting is top notch and the vinyl pressed to a
modern high standard.
I have the same but only in XRCD2. Great demo disc. Not just technically
brilliant, fantastic dynamics and the artistry of the performers is pretty
darn good too. :-)

Somebody better tell those Thorens TD-124 and Garrard 301 fans. Then
maybe the price on those "terrible" idler wheel drive TTs will come
down to DD levels. :-)

The CD versions sound better, and are generally easy to find.
Now you have to figure out whether its the music you like, or the ritual of
playing vinyl.

It is possible to have both. I'm assuming that you would not even consider

:( the King James release went out of print before I could buy a copy.

I had all three at one time. I paid $35.00/LP at the time. My (new) wife
(same as my current wife) couldn't understand why I would spend so much
on one record. I told her it was better I spend it on records and
electronics then on bars and alcohol. Now she complains about the number
of bikes I own. Ya just cant please em... =)

I disagree. The Sheffield LPs that I have are fantastic records.
"Hollywood Town" and the Leinsdorf LA Phil sessions (one of Prokofiev,
one of Stravinsky/Debussy and one of Wagner) are among the best sounding
sources I've ever heard outside of live. I was never impressed with the
CDs. There's one exception, IMO: The Russian sessions sound pretty
much alike to me on both media, and neither are among my favorites.
Your mileage may vary, of course, and folks should listen to the media
that brings the experience of the music in the most satisfying way to
THEM.

Why transcribe an LP, when you already have the CD?

For some reason... duping a CD from a Sund-to-vinyl source seems to me
no better then the current poor-quality CDs that are being manufactured

You make it sound like all currently-manufactured CDs have quality problems.
Of course they don't.
I understand rabid vinyl bigots saying such things over and over again,
because after all they will tell any lie in the interest of forcing vinyl

Well, thanks for your highly valued opinion. Had the subject been
Columbia LPs of the 70s and 80s vs. their CD counterparts, my opinion
would have been different.

> You make it sound like all currently-manufactured CDs have quality problems.
Don't be silly, Turdy. CDs have always been a boon to consumers compared
to the media available in the past. Aside from the stupid decisions made
by many people who do the mastering, the only lingering problem CDs suffer
from is their hypnotic effect on the 'borg colonies. Saying "digital" to a
music-hating 'borg like yourself is tantamount to dropping turds into a
meadow full of flies.

Whhhhhaaaaaaaatttt!!!!! If Pavlov had you there would have
been no need to use dogs! You are the most predictable
person on the planet.
CD (ring). Digital (ring). Vinyl (ring). ABX(ring). Like
a flash Arny you're there - *everytime*. Predictable just
doesn't describe your behaviour well enough. Applying
Newtons 3rd law would be more apt ;-) Every statement about
vinyl or CD/digital requires an equal and opposite reaction
;-)

Who was talking about transcribing LPs to CD??? I said it
is possible that you can enjoy the ritual of playing vinyl

I think that the Prokofiev is the best performance of that work on
record, and in the top 10 of best sound I've ever heard in my home.
Ditto for sound on the Wagner, but not my favorite performance. The
Stravinsky is less successful on both fronts, IMO.

I don't think it necessarily detracts from an enjoyable musical
experience. Researchers who study audio seem to agree with me.
So what kind of music have you been listening to recently, GOIA?

So what kind of music have you been listening to recently,

Only test tones ;-) Although he did have that real hit

Irrelavant™. Turdborg awards the coveted "vinyl bigot" label to any Normal
who doesn't condemn the hated vinyl medium frequently, vociferously,
obstreperously, and with extreme and irrational prejudice.

LOL! I thought you said you understood logic, GOIA. But then again,

You remind me of the scene in "Life of Brian" where Brian tries to

I've always thought this recording sounded dry and "studio-y". The
performance *is* good, though, although I prefer an earlier (mono) recording
on Capital by Steinberg/Pittsburgh Symphony.
Never cared for Lincoln Mayorga, but Amanda McBroom's singing is absolutely
first rate, as is the sound.
And the Harry James recordings are simply not duplicable.
These Sheffields and others still have pride of place in the "audiophile"
section of my music shelves.

Yep, with it's single shared DAC for L + R channels. There is a certain

Bad compared to what?
Compared to vinyl? No.
Compared to tape? No.
Fact is that the CDP 101 would not pass a straight wire bypass test with
*any* program material, like a good modern player. People had a pretty easy
time picking it out with pink noise, white noise, and certain choral music.
But, it would pass a straight wire bypass test with most music.
Compared to the best vinyl playback systems of that day or this, the CDP 101
was brilliant.

A cost-cutting move that has been used up until recently. You aren't going
to hear its effects unless you have an electrically-summed center channel,
and pick your music for testing very carefully.

It would truncate reverb tails compared to vinyl.

Right - shared DACs have definately fallen out of favor in the mainstream,
but up until lately you could occasionally find them used in very, very
cheap players, cheap pc sound cards, etc.

Never saw that happen, but I obviously never listened to very CDP101.
One possibility is that the CDP 101 you auditioned was broken. Perhaps the
CDP 101 under test was broken in a certain way that was pretty much unique
to the CDP 101.
While much has been made of the CDP 101 DAC being shared between the
channels, not much has been said about the fact that the DAC was also shared
in the amplitude domain. As I recall, the CDP 101 DAC had only 8 bits.
The CDP 101 8 bit DAC was run twice for every channel sample, with the
analog scaling changed in-between. As previously mentioned the CDP 101 DAC
was run through this sequence twice for every set of stereo sample, once for
each channel. So, the CDP 101 8 bit DAC was run through 4 conversions for
every recorded set of stereo samples.
I forget the order, but for discussion lets say that first the high order 8
bits were loaded into the DAC chip and the resulting analog voltage related
to that was gated into the analog buffer and held, and then the low order 8
bits were loaded into the DAC and the and the resulting analog voltage was
scaled by 256 and gated into the analog buffer and summed to the voltage
from the high order bits.
Obviously, this process has a unique set of failure modes where one one
half of the data word was converted, but the other half was not converted.
If you convert only the high order 8 bits, you end up with only about 55 dB
dynamic range, which could indeed audibly truncate reverb tails.
Scaling in the DAC were a feature of another early piece of digital gear
with a checkered history - the 3M digital recorder. It worked well enought
was in good shape, but it could break and fall out of adjustment in ways
that are very unfamiliar in modern times.
In modern times, DACs need not have any adjustments at all, and when they
break in almost any way they are totally broken. They go dead.
When working right, the CDP 101 has good dynamic range, as
http://www.pcavtech.com/play-rec/Sony_CDP-101/index.htm
shows. This particular player is guaranteed not to audibly or measureably
truncate reverb tails.
> I could CLEARLY HEAR the difference.
What is unsure is whether the CDP 101 being auditioned was in good operating
condtition at the time.

Look here:
http://www.pcavtech.com/play-rec/Sony_CDP-101/index.htm
The dynamic range test is done with a -60 dB signal, but notice that the -60
dB signal passes wtih the largest harmonic more than 100 dB down.

It is only in decline because of the weakness of the American electorate.
After 8 years at the helm of the ship, George W Bush, the harbinger of
freedom, democracy and spiritual purity will cease to be the leader of
the Free World.
To call it a catastrophe for Western Civilization is a euphemism.
Who will be our collective moral compass in these bleak times? I mourn
the loss of our steward.
