Never been there, but it doesn't look to me like the original studio at
3614 Jackson Highway. Looks like a nice setup anyway.

No, that's the new Muscle Shoals. The old one was a cinderblock rectangle
with some **** on the walls. Worked great but then again so did Sun with
Sam running things and that only had normal acoustic tile you'd put in your
dropped ceiling in the basement.

The Record Plant in LA moved from their original location. The "new" location
is still the record plant.

well, i guess it is, sorta, kinda...

3rd St with C. Stone, et al was the real thing imo.
it wasn't quite the same after the move, even before Chris sold it.

Muscle Shoals studios:

Fame - opened 1959, still in operation. Tons of hits.

Muscle Shoals Sound (1) - opened 1969 by ex-Fame studio musicians
Beckett, Hood, Hawkins & Johnson with Jerry Wexler's help. Also
referred to as 3614 Jackson Hwy. studio - unused for many years,
someone is trying to make a go of it now IIRC. More tons of hits.

MSS (2) - the "new" studio now apparently for sale, opened 1978 by the
studio musicians when they outgrew MSS (1). Bought in 1985 by Malaco
Records, who are the present owners and operators. Less hits than the
other 2 (the late 70's Bob Seger stuff like "Old Time R&R" and
"Against the Wind" and some Delbert McClinton stuff was done here, as
well as Malaco regulars like Johnnie Taylor), but a very nice 2-studio
setup.

The **** on the walls at MSS were panels of both acoustic tile and
Burlap/insulation spaced along the exposed concrete wall. Burlap over
insulation covered the entire ceiling. Burlap-covered booths, red and
blue. Burlap/insulation baffles, orange, yellow. A leaky, funky place.

Sun was more than just 12X12 acoustic tile. It was the sawtooth shape of
the ceiling that gave the room its sound...something Sam carried over to
the 'new' studios on Madison Ave. in 1960 (along with wall baffles that
could be opened and closed to change the room acoustics). The little
room at Sun on Union Ave. really compresses the sound as the volume goes
up.

I was surprised to find that Sun is actually quite a bit more
sophisticated than that.
