I have just got a MOTU 828MKii up and running with Logic 5.5 on
Windows 2000. The whole installation went reasonably smoothly.
Although the CD that shipped with the unit was unreadable on all the
PC's I tried it on, so I had to download the drivers from their
website.

The only problem I am having is that when recording into logic using
the 2 mic inputs I am getting very low volume levels. The mic preamps
do not seem to be powerful enough. Anyone else experiencing this
problem.

I have emailed motu support about this, still awaiting a response.

TT

I've sorted my mic problems by routing the mic send into one of the
inputs. Gives me enough boost for decent recording. I've had it less
than a week, and on the whole, I think the MOTU 828mkii is a very good
piece of kit. Although their technical support appear to be far too
busy to answer any support emails.

The Motu 828mkii will run fine on a PC, although if you plan to run a
Motu firewire device on a PC, I would strongly recommend the
following:

- Ensure the firewire card you use does not run the NEC chipset. A
card running the Texas instruments chipset is recommended.
- Use Windows 2000. It is by far the most stable Windows platform
available.
- When installing Windows 2000, make ensure ACPI mode is disabled (see
this article: http://service.steinberg.net/knowledge_pro.nsf/show/acpi_kills_audio_performance).
- Try to ensure that your firewire device is running on its own
independant IRQ channel to avoid any possible conflicts.
- Do not run any apps or hardware on your setup other than what is
absolutely necessary for your audio requirements.
- Keep you audio running on separate hard drives to your operating
system.
- Optimise your windows configuration for background processes, rather
than applications.
- Make sure all your drivers, service packs and BIOS images are up to
date.

iBook has one firewire port. are you doing this with a firewire
bus/splitter? if so which one? any problems with that?

The iBook has only one port, but both the 828mkii and the external
drive have two ports. I plug the computer into the drive, and then
daisy chain the 828mkii off the drive's other port.
