Wondering what would be the best way to patch a UA LA - 610 into a
Tascam 388. As an insert? Are the 388 inserts balanced? Line in? Are
they balanced? Mic in and through the Tascam pre's?

That'd give you the shortest path.

Probably not. But ground one end of the output (it's transformer-coupled so
it won't care) and connect the other to whichever terminal of the insert is
the input, and you should be good to go. You'll probably need to make cables
for this.

Probably, but they almost certainly pad the signal down and send it through
the mic pres.

No way.

Go in the insert; otherwise you won't get much benefit from the 610.

Peace,

388 inserts are not balanced. That's fine. I'd just run the 610 into
the insert and try to avoid the Tascam preamps. You may want to make
up an XLR-to-TRS ring cable.

Man! I had one of those 20 years ago or more-)

They are not balanced and yes you should go through the inserts or you
will sound like a 1986 portastudio. Spend some time calibrating and
watch it cause it goes out fast. That unit needs it more then most and
it super sensitive if you don't clean it well too-.
