I'm looking at the Squeezebox to play my digital music connection
remotely via ethernet, my questions are:
-I want to run the squeezebox connected to an external hard drive with
my audio files loaded connected via ethernet, will this work? I would
rather not have the pc running if possible, it's noisey and uses lots
of power.
-what other components do i need to make the squeezebox work? My
assumption is: an amplifier, a router & speakers [not to mention the
PC & external hard drive].

The Squeezebox requires a program called Slimserver to work. That program
has to be loaded on your PC and running in the background. So to access your
music files, your computer has to be on. You can access internet radio and
some other services without your computer.
