View Full Version : Subwoofer - no sound / best way to connect set up

I just purchased the following:
Denon AVR-2808CI
Boston Acoustics HS 60MDNT - rear
Boston Acoustics HS 225MDNT - center
Boston Acoustics HS 460MDNT - front
Boston Acoustics HPS 12HO MDNT - sub
sub cable - MonsterBass 400

Existing equipment:
HDTV Samsung 40" LCD
DVD OPPO DV-981HD
Satellite standard receiver DISH 322 (Dish Network)

My problem is that the sub is not producing any sound. When I run auto
setup on the receiver the sub works and is being detected. However if
I watch a movie, play CD, DVD or radio the sub isn't working at all. I
went back to the store and we tested the sub and receiver. Everything
worked there.

SW settings:
- The sub is turned ON
- 75% volume
SW settings in the receiver:
- SW-On
- Volume 0db
- LEF can be set to "LEF" or "LEF+Main". If I set it to "LEF" and
connect the SW cable to only the LEF input in the sub I get no sound
from the sub at all. If I set it to LEF+Main and use splitter at the
end of the cable so the cables go to L & R input in the sub I
sometimes get some sound but it's so quiet that I have to put my hand
on the sub to feel it with volume set up to max.

How things are connected:
DVD -> HDMI -> Receiver
SAT -> RCA (analog) -> Receiver
Receiver -> HDMI -> HDTV

I try all different audio setup on the receiver. Double checked all
the cables (if I touch the sub cable by the receiver end I can hear
the bass sound coming out from the sub), etc... The receiver shows SW
as one of the configured and used speakers. Am I doing something wrong
here? I know that the sub plays only the low frequency sounds. Is it
possible that a CD played on the DVD won't have the low frequency
sounds?

My other question is: what would be the best way to connect the set up
listed above.

Thanks,
JP

Depending on where your crossover is set, it is entirely possible that
the music you are playing won't go low enough to require the sub.

Do you have any movie DVDs? Rent an action movie or something like that
- it will have loads of low frequency information and you'll know if the
sub is kicking in or not.

BTW, when I first set up my home theatre I had the same concern as you -
it seemed like my sub wasn't working. I had the crossover set pretty
low, which generally isn't a good idea unless you've got very bass
capable speakers (which you don't).

You probably should be running with your crossover set to 80 (set this
in your receiver). If your sub has a crossover, set it to the maximum,
or by-pass.

you haven't said what your xover is set at.it can be`set at both the
sub and receiver,
try setting it first at 120 at the receiver an sub, or higher, if
available, just
to be`sure it works
and try setting the receiver for your mains to be small

I was not aware of crossover setting until Bill mentioned it. My
receiver I think is set to 80Hz (it's highlighted in the manual) and
the range is 40-250. SW frequency range is 25-150.
I'll play with it when I get home tonight.

Thanks,
JP

It was the receiver sub frequency setting. All good here now.

Thanks.
