hi, i'd like to get a distortion sound on my voice like the one used
from marilyn manson, or alec empire(http://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=74XranJcH6s).. on their voice.
i thought of using a stomp box.. but what should i buy? shall i pass
my microphone into a DI box, and then through the stomp box, and
then.. to my mixer?
thanks to everyone will reply to this!

You can get that sound if you sing through a SansAmp (or an amp).
It's more of an amp sound than a stomp box sound. A stomp box
by itself would have a lot more treble on it. And there isn't that
much distortion on that vocal, it's more like the compression and eq
you get naturally from an amp with slight overdrive.
If you use a stomp box (without an amp) you'd have to roll of the
treble and boost the mid on your mixer.

You can do precisely that. Better to record dry, though, then loop
through the stombox on mixdown, though, as this gives you a little
better control.
The standard studio box that everybody uses for this kind of thing is
made by Little Labs. You can do it yourself with a couple DI boxes
and some pads (and you will need higher than microphone level going
into the stomp box, so put it after the preamp), but the Little Labs
box makes it easy to control the levels over a wide range so there's
a lot less fiddling to do in order to get the sound you want.
