I won't work, most problems are caused by standing waves in the bass area
and solving that takes up space. Basstraps in the corners and 3-5 inches of
insulation on the backwall ( ie rockwool covered with cloth) lifted off the
wall with maybe another 3-5 inches of air behind will do the trick.
It all depends on how big your problems are when you listen back to your
stuff outside the studio. If the bass is always too loud you can be sure
that you have standing waves.
Midrange is less of a problem and hi-end is almost never an issue and since
curtains will only affect these areas you will only end up with even worse
problems.
If you use a square room a good idea is to place the set up (mixer,
speakers, etc) in a corner because you will than have more walls for the
sound to hit before it gets back to you.
Sound moves like a ball, everytime it hits something it loses a little speed
and the point is to kill it as fast as possible and avoid that it ever
returns to the same place more than once.
