View Full Version : Bargain mics: Naiant MSH1 condensers?

A friend recently told me about Naiant mics: http://www.naiant.com/studiostore/microphones.html
The MH1 is apparently based on a concept from a TapeOp article I must
have missed-- the Naiant MSH1 is an omni condenser that sells in
matched pairs for $44 and the few reviews I can find have been pretty
positive. I'm going to try a pair as drum overheads, but am wondering
if others have given them a shot and to what result?
thanks,
Kiwanda

I just used one as a drum overhead on a concert recording.
I will be mixing it down in the next week or two. (I've got six
concert recordings to mix down plus my day job.)
The concept seems pretty straightforward.
Dunno what it has to do with TapeOp.

I did some listening to the samples on their website as well as some
comparisons on others' sites. I didn't like it compared to the Shoeps
CMC6 and CMC5 MK2, and DPA 4061 clips that I heard, but we're talking
some very serious price differences here. For $22 it sounds darn good
to me, though I don't think I'll buy one.
Listening to the samples really got me thinking about buying a good
inexpensive ($200 or so)omni for recording acoustic guitar.
Now I have to find that omni...

AFAIK the concept of using Panasonic omni mic capsules for serious recording
and measuring was first exposed to the public in an Audio Amateur article
that was published maybe in the early 1980s. Authors were myself and Dr.
Berhard Muller. However, there was nothing particularly impressive about the
article other than our abilities to grasp the obvious features and benefits
of these little capsules. Digi-Key was selling them for under $2 at the
time.

The MSH-1 seems to be able to take a bit of level. I tried it on under
snare and it did ok. Bright and crispy if you like that kind of thing.
The snare wasn't all that loud though.
I agree they are a bit noisy for ambient recording.
They don't fit well into mic clips. I found using some foam and gaffa
tape to attach it to the snare stand worked better.
I don't think I'd buy a pair, as there are far better mics for not much
more money.

I got a pair a year ago and tested them out briefly. They sounded fine
but need a lot of gain to compare to any of my sd mics. For the price
it was worth it just to give them a shot. I haven't had any project
since last year as I moved 3000 miles from my studio for most of it so
I really haven't had a situation to use them in under real
circumstances.

We have a number of them here and we use them all the time for overheads
with very nice results.
