View Full Version : SFS (Audio, I guess) Files

The sounds in the GPS navigators that I've been playing with are *.sfs
files. I can't find much useful about them on the 'net, nor can I find
anything that plays or edits them. Anyone working in the field that
uses those file who can suggest a player/editor?

Hey! Good research! Thanks. The unit in question with the SFS files is
indeed a Navigon.
It looks like it's going to be too much trouble to modify those files.
There's really only one that interests me, and that's the annoying
sound it makes when it boots up. There are only three files that are
identified with "sound" in their names that aren't instructions in a
language, so I suppose I could try renaming or removing those one at a
time and see which one, if any, makes it shut up when I turn it on.
Or I could just leave it alone. I think I'm probably going to return
this one (I'm evaluating several GPSs at the moment) before I find too
much about it that I like. What I particularly don't like about it is
that it's annoyingly sluggish responding to data entry. I'm not
impatient, but humans need instant feedback when they press a button.

That's really of no interest to me, but thanks anyway. I have three
other stand-alone GPSs here and they're all more responsive than the
Navigon so I know sluggishness isn't a characteristic of the genre.
Of course now I'm faced with a dilemma. In a discussion about this
model and its slow response to touch screen input on a forum someone
(CV unknown) said he heard that Navigon is "aware of the problems" and
will have a firmware update in January. However, in order to get a
refund, I need to return them in another week. I suppose I could
return it, as well as the most likely keeper, buy another one in
January, and see how it works, and if it's no better, buy another of
my current favorite-by-a-tiny-margin. Or forget the whole thing saying
to myself "You've had your GPS experience, now move on and start
practicing your guitar."
