I'm a Electric Light Orchestra Fan since I was 13. Like Jeff Lynne wanted to
make Music like the Beatles I tried to make songs like ELO. Maybe you like
to listen to them on myspace.com/paulraab. I hope you like it!
All best!

Their gig at Wembley was the first big rock gig I went to and was certainly
somewhat influential in my decision to become a sound engineer. I still
remember being awestruck when the UFO came down.

Hi Paul,
I'm not sure how long I have been an ELO fan. When they first came out,
I was a little lukewarm regarding them (I'm class of 76 so grew up
square in their era). But they strangely grew on me as I got older. The
more I began to seriously listen (you know, where you just sit down and
do nothing else but listen to an entire album, giving it your whole
attention) the more I started appreciating ELO and Lynne's inventive use
of the recording studio. It took me 10 years to realize the sound effect
in the "Concerto for a Rainy Day" medley (Out of the Blue) was actually
a vocoder voicing the title of the medley. It seems like there are still
chestnuts there waiting to be found.
I love ELO. I consider them my favorite, all-time band, and that is why,
for a decade, I have used their lyrics in my .sigs.
I'll be stopping by shortly to see your site.

Dear Randy!
I thank you a lot for your lovely words! Yes, E.L.O. and Jeff are heavy to
describe. He is still the only person who influenced my Life deeply. I
wanted to become a filmdirector when I saw George Lucas "The Empire strikes
back" with 12. I didn't understand a word then cause I just started to learn
english in school. But I was so impressed that George changed my Life. But I
didn't get a filmdirector though I was long time filmmaker in Austria. Also
I dreamed since I was 16 or so, sitting in school, to make songs like E.L.O.
someday. It took till now to get it someway. I'm not there now where I'm
heading for: the typical E.L.O.-Sound from "A New World Record" to "Time",
but I hope I get it in the next few years. I have no synthesizers yet, but
hope I get them till the end of next year. Moog, Minimoog, Korg, Yamaha
CS-80, Oberheim, Wurlitzer. Then I hope I can reach somehow this sound.
Well, I have not the voice of Jeff, like Eric Troyer didn't have on "Honest
Men" from ELO, part 2. But maybe I get in the end something simillar like
what Jeff wanted: to make songs like the Beatles. I want to make songs like
E.L.O. That's my story. I'm just beginning.

Hi Paul,
You mention getting enough synthesizers. I think it's pretty obvious
that ELO's sound spanned two "epochs": the acoustic epoch, from the
beginning until and through Out Of The Blue, and the synth epoch, from
Discovery through Balance of Power.
As you said, I think ANWR captured the quintessence of the ELO personality,
at least in their acoustic epoch, and in my opinion that's by far the
most important epoch. But OOTB was the richest, instrument-wise, from
the acoustic epoch. I waffle on which I like better.
So, I would start saving up a few thousand bucks so you can pay a bunch of
string players from the local musician's guild to better mimic that
sound! Seriously, it is this aspect (the *real* strings) that was
crucial in my attraction. I do appreciate the other epoch too, but not
as much. Time is probably their best in that era.
Hey, thanks for the sparks, and best of luck to you.

Invitation: listen to the song "Your Love" on
http://www.myspace.com/monkeydenrecording, it sounds like a Jeff Lynne
production, but isn't. Also: Mr Blusky from "The Delgados". If you find it
somewhere, listen to it! It's far better than on Out of the Blue.

What is E.L.O.?
This question I asked myself a long time. Here is my answer:
Oh no not Susan, Poor Boy, Waterfall, One Summer Dream, Tightrope, Mission,
So Fine, Living Thing, Above the Clouds, Do Ya, Shangri-La, Turn to Stone,
It's over, Sweet talking Woman, Night in the City, Big Whhels, Stepping Out,
Standing in the Rain, Summer & Lightning, The Whale, Shine a little Love,
Confusion, Need her Love, Last Train to London, Wishing, Midnight Blue,
Don'T bring me down, I'm Alive, The Fall, Don't walk away, All over the
World, Xanadu, Prologue, Twilight, Yours Truly, Ticket to the Moon, The Way
Life's meant to be, Another Heart breakes, Rain is falling, From the End of
the World, The Lights go down, Here is the News, 21st Century Man, Hold on
Tight, Epilogue, Bouncer, When Time stood still, Julie don't live here,
Secret Messages, Bluebird, Time after Time, Stranger, After All, So Serious,
Calling America, Moment in Paradise, It really doesn't matter, Lonesome
Lullaby, Destination Unknown, Caught in a Trap, Helpless, Tears in your
Life, Love changes all, Buildings have Eyes.
And if they were E.L.O.-Songs then they were:
Borderline, Sirens, When we was Fab, Zombie Zoo, Sooner or Later, Message
from the Country, Come with me, On with Show, Sea of Dreams, End of the
Road, Poor little Fool, The Story of me, New Blue Moon, The End of the Line,
Heading for the Light, A Love so beautiful, I'll get you Back, Heaven on a
Sunday, The Dark of the Sun, Too good to be true, Built to last.

like to hear new melodies you can take a short look:

Only now I found the right Words for me what I have on my Mind:
Jeff Lynne founded the Electric Light Orchestra to make music like the
Beatles. I founded SLO to make songs like ELO and Idle Race. Please excuse
or forgive me my Announcements on the tracks. The sound reminds me this time
to Idle Race or Ringo Starr. But what I have on Mind and what I'm trying is
to make it sound like ELO from "A New World Record" (1976) till "Time"
(1981). That's what I'm heading for. I haven't heard anything like that till
now. It's simple unique. Making Songs myself results only of waiting for the
next Jeff Lynne Song. The Song "Lady Jane" was in Radio in Germany 2 weeks
ago (www.dat-radio.de), although I'll try to sing it again - better - and
let it remix and master. "My Philosophy" comes Best with my present
listeners. "Part of the World" is my favourite and 1st Song. "Stop the
Light" was a hit in the 70ies performed from the band of my brother "The
Skin". "Leaving for the Night" should be sang again, but it has a nice
Refrain. "Good Morning World" sounds just good for me, though it also needs
Remixing & Mastering. Last week I could play a few songs on the austrian
radio www.freequenns.at. And I found the Second Light Orchestra mentioned in
the newspaper "Der Grazer" (www.grazer.at) as "Paul Raab" allows to revive
Electric Light Orchestra".
That's my Project now with a Preliminary heat of over 20 Years and leads to
what I want to make in a few years: a featurefilm about a boy who wants to
become a musician (like "Flasdance"or "Coyote Ugly") inmcluding
to them 20 Songs from Electric Light Orchestra.

Paul,
You are headed in the right direction with the sound. The vocals
would sound better truned WAY down in the mix or eliminated
completely.

"I dont even know where to begin
But baby I got one thing I want you to know
We found love, so dont fight it
Life is a rollercoaster just gotta ride it
I need you, so stop hiding
Our love is a mystery, lets get inside it"
"Just on the Border of your Waking Mind [there] lies another time where
darkness and Light are One. And as you tread the Halls of Sanity you'll feel
so glad. You will feel unable to go beyond. I have a Message from another
time".
"My sweet Lord"
"Step by step my life went down
Only troubles all around
It seemed to me that darkness has no end
I used to climb the mountains high
I thought that I can reach the sky
Searching for another promised land
Only haven't heard my cry
I pray the Lord to take me high
Now reach the wind beneath my wings
Now I can fly
Come give me your hand
I'll show you the land
All the dreams in the night
We will fly side by side
Let me open you heart
Give your life a new start
Turn a river of tears to an
Ocean of Light.
Walking in the darkest night
Looking for a guiding light
I found the meaning of my life today
Always knew I've got to fight
For a holy star that shines so bright
Even if it's only a heartbeat away"
"We live in a free world
(I whistle down the wind)
Carry on smiling
And the world will smile with you
Life is a flower
So precious in your hand
Carry on smiling
And the world will smile with you
When every race is run
And the day is closing in
I dont care about the world
Im living for the light.
Dont cry for me today.
I can not be your judge,
Mr. jailer is your host (God?).
Hes keeping you inside
And hides you from the world;
No catcher in the rye
Can help you from yourself
Please mr. agony (God?)
Release them for a while
Learn them the consequences of
Living without life"
"The seat is soon taken, contact is made,
Surveyed by another whose secret is safe
Whose side are you on?
You don't have to believe to play that double cross,
Spying for the side that pays the most.
Too late to use a lie detector, now some heads will roll."
"I find it hard to sleep at night
this jealousy is burning bright.
Visions of somebody else
torments me to
destruction.
I think of him making
making love to you
It's more than I can bear
more than I can bear.
When I saw you walking down the road
with someone new -
I couldn't believe that it's true"
"Come closer to me, drift into my melody
Don't resist my charms
When you could be in my arms
Let your inhibitions go
Let me take control
Come closer to me, come closer to me
Let your inhibitions go,
Come closer to me
No, no never,
Come closer to me, step into this harmony
Don't deprive yourself
To a helping of myself"
"What is there to say
When all the love has slipped away
In half a minute.
There is always something we can blame,
But in the end, it's just the same -
Suddenly, you find yourself alone - Half a minute!
What is there to say
When every dream just fades away
In half a minute?
Every explanation we can find
Will never change it, we are through.
Suddenly, you find yourself alone.
Half a minute!
"A place
Where nobody dared to go
The love that we came to know
They call it Xanadu
And now
Open your eyes and see
What we have made is real!
We are in Xanadu.
The love, the echos of long ago;
You needed the world to know
They are in Xanadu.
The dream,
That came through a million years
That lived on through all the tears
It came to Xanadu."
"One day
I gotta get out of here
I gotta make everything clear
I gotta see you.
I know
The way that I feel is wrong, so wrong
But I gotta carry on
When you ain't around.
I believe things are going wrong
And the night goes on and on
All your dreams have flown away
And the sun won't shine today.
I know
You're waiting so close to me
But how will you ever see
As time rolls away:
Lonely
But trying to be so proud
And just as I turn around
The lights go down."
"If I could make a wish
What more could I ask?
So sleep, silent angel, go to sleep"
"This is the only life for me
Surround myself around my own fantasy
You just gotta be strong and believe in yourself
Forget all the sadness 'cause love is all you need
Do you know what it's like to be alone in this world
When you're down and out on your luck and you're a failure?
Wake up screaming in the middle of the night
You think it's all been a waste of time
It's been a bad year
You start believing ev'rything's gonna be alright
Next minute you're down and you're flat on your back
A brand new day is beginning
Get that sunny feeling and you're on your way
Just believe - just keep passing the open windows
Do you know how it feels when you don't have a friend
Without a job and no money to spend?
You're a stranger
All you think about is suicide
One of these days you're gonna lose the fight
You'd better keep out of danger!
That same old feeling just keeps burning deep inside
Keep telling yourself it's gonna be the end
Oh get yourself together
Things are looking better everyday
Just believe - just keep passing the open windows
This is the only life for me
Surround myself around my own fantasy
You just gotta be strong and believe in yourself
Forget all the sadness 'cause love is all you need
Love is all you need
Just believe - just keep passing the open windows"
"I think that any love is good lovin'.
And so I took what I could get.
And now I'm feelin' better, 'cause I found out for sure
She took me to her doctor and he told me of a cure
He said that any love is good love
So I took what I could get, yes, I took what I could get"
"I saw you walking down the street with him
You know I almost could've died
I didnt know you had a second friend
I never thought you woulda lied
I never said that I was all that choice
I never said I was a dream
I didnt think youd pull that second voice
It seems a little too cheap
I see somebody else has taken you some other place
I didnt know you had another man, I didnt know,
I thought I was in
I didnt know you had another plan, I didnt know
But I guess I was wrong"
"The last that ever she saw him
He passed on worried and warning
Carried away by a moonlight shadow.
Lost in a river last saturday night
Far away on the other side.
He was caught in the middle of a desperate fight
And she couldn't find how to push through
The trees that whisper in the evening
Carried away by a moonlight shadow
Sing a song of sorrow and grieving
Carried away by a moonlight shadow
All she saw was a silhouette of a gun
Far away on the other side.
He was shot six times by a man on the run
And she couldn't find how to push through
I stay.
I pray.
I see you in heaven far away
Will you come to talk to me this night?
The night was heavy but the air was alive
But she couldn't find how to push through
Carried away by a moonlight shadow
Far away on the other side."
"Sometimes I find another world inside my mind when I realize the crazy
things we do.
It makes me feel ashamed to be alive.
It makes me want to run away and hide.
Its all about the money.
I don't think its funny. And I think we got it all wrong anyway.
We find stranges ways,
of showing them how much we really care.
When in fact we don't seem to care at all.
This pretty world is gettin out of hand.
So tell me how we failed to understand."
"My sweet Lord, I really want to see you. I really want to be with you! My
sweet Lord. But it takes so long, my Lord."
"I just called to say I love you. I just called to say how much I care. I
just called to say I love you. And I mean it from the bottom of my Heart!"

My Bob Dylan Christmas Songs
My Bob Dylan Favourites (the Man in the Moon here is for me a Synonym for
God):
Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile
Whatever colors you have in your mind
I'll show them to you and you'll see them shine
Until the break of day, let me see you make him smile
His clothes are dirty but his hands are clean
And you're the best thing that he's ever seen
Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile
Why wait any longer for the world to begin
You can have your cake and eat it too
Why wait any longer for the one you love
When he's standing in front of you
Handy Dandy controversy surrounds him
He's been around the world and back again
Something in the moonlight still hounds him.
Handy Dandy just like sugar and candy
Handy Dandy
He'll say what are you made off
He'll say can you repeat what you say
You'll say what are you afraid off
He'll say nothing.
She'll say you got all the time in the world honey.
She said boy you're talking crazy.
Handy Dandy just like sugar and candy
Handy Dandy pour him another brandy
Handy Dandy he got a basket of
flowers and a bag full of sorrow
He finishes his drink he gets up from the table he says
OK boys I'll see you tomorrow.
Handy Dandy just like sugar and candy.
And now my Christmas:
There was a little boy and there was a little girl
And they lived in an alley under the red sky.
There was an old man and he lived in the moon,
One summer's day he came passing by.
Someday little girl, everything for you is gonna be new
Someday little girl you'll have a diamond as big as your shoe
Let the wind blow low, let the wind blow high.
One day the little boy and the little girl were both baked in a pie.
This is the key to the kingdom and this is the town
This is the blind horse that leads you around
Let the bird sing, let the bird fly,
One day the man in the moon went home and the river went dry.
My Christmas Word (taken from David Bowie):
"There's a Starman waiting in the Sky (God? Or Jesus?). He likes to come and
meet us, but he thinks he blows our Mind. - "And there's nothing I can do".'
"And may God's Love be with you!"
Merry Christmas to all of you!
God bless, love, and protect you!
Paul
My Christmas Wish:
Please leave a Light on for me to give ma all the Love that I need. Thank
you!

I can see by your grin
That you're trembling within
It's all over town, cheer down
And the smile on your face
Is sometimes out of place
Don't mind, no frowns, cheer down.
If your hair should fall
If your shares should crash
You'll get by even without getting a rash
There's no tears to be shed
I'm gonna love you instead
I want you around, cheer down.
When your teeth drop out
You'll get by even without taking a bite
If your dog should be dead
I'm gonna love you instead
The world loves a clown, cheer down.
I want you around, cheer down
