View Full Version : ISDN Equipment Noise

I'm working with a reporter to address a noise issue in his makeshift
audio booth. Do ISDN units (in this case, specifically a Telos
Zephyr) contain variable speed fans which might get louder when the
unit heats up? I know this is true for some computers.
I've heard complaints of fan noise, and the likely culprit IMO is a
laptop computer which emits audible fan noise. The Zephyr however is
dead quiet, but the folks where the complaint originated want the ISDN
unit relocated.
I realize this is slightly off-topic but I'm hoping one of you guys
has had one of these boxes open and could comment.
Thanks in advance.

Depends...Older so called Zephyr Classics do have a fan that can
become noisy over time. I have noticed these fans being noisier as the
units become warm. Contact Telos for a replacement.
Newer Zephyr XStreams do not have a fan.

The original Zephyr has a fan in it, and they get noisy as they get old
and start to fail. If it's noisy, fix it before it siezes up entirely
and damages the unit. Pull the fan out, remove the sticker with the logo
on it. Under the sticker you will find a round plastic tab and when the
tab is pried open you'll see the bearing. Put a drop of good turbine oil
(anything that meets the Ampex capstan motor specs is fine... I use Zoom
Spout Oil from Ace Hardware) on the bearing, then pack it with a little
precision grease. Put it back together and it'll be nice and quiet.

So I gather that the fans are *not* variable speed, i.e. the noise to
which you refer is due to wear out and not an intermittent ramp up of
fan speed?
Thanks, as always, for the feedback.
