When a car stereo says that it has mp3 playback, it usually means that
if you insert a cd full of mp3's, it will be able to read and play them.
To be sure that the stereo supports an iPod, you have to ask a
salesperson on the floor, or check the box extensively, and ask/look for
something that says "peripheral output" or "audio output ports."
That feature wasn't that common back in 2001 (right after the iPod
first came out for Mac, basically), I had to pick a very specific cd
player/tuner from Sony that had it. To be able to even reach it
though, the tech guys installing the stereo had to run a cable from the
back of the stereo, underneath the paneling of part of the interior of
the car, and the unto the floor of the passenger seat. It's not very
elegant, to say the least, but it's worked for the most part.
Today, it's much better b/c the port will be located on the face of the
stereo, right where you put in a cd, and on the box it will be labeled
as having an "mp3 player output"
