so i just bought my first pair of monitors. i bought the m audio bx8a
ones. for 300 bucks plus 35 bucks shipping i couldnt pass. anyways. on to my question. what should i do to make sure they are in good working order? what sort of tests should i run? ive been into music for ages, but recording is somewhat new to me, and these are the first real monitors i have owned. what should i do? thanks for your time in advance... |

In case you really don't know what to listen for, make sure both ways (tweeter, woofer) are working on both speakers. Listen for odd distortions coming from broken membranes. See 1. Why is it that you "couldn't pass" up this "deal", when you've never even heard them? How could you know whether or not it was a good deal? Not being snippy here, I seriously want to know what the rationale is. Strange how people spend money on audio gear sight unseen, but no one would even consider buying a car without test-driving it first. -dave M. |

I'll assume that you don't have testing gear, etc. Put them side by side, and listen to a mono signal. Set up an A/B comparison by having someone else stand behind them (so you can stay in the same place) and have them use the gain controls to switch back and forth between them... turn one down, then turn it back up while turning the other one down... back and forth. If you can't detect a difference in how each one sounds, they're probably fine - or else they each have an identical problem! And what Boris said. John Dixon Phonogenic Productions Kansas City |

It's a bit late now to worry about that. Just listen and learn to like them, whatever they sound like. Next time you might want to audition monitors first before you drop the money on the table, but it's a bit late to worry about it now. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. Monitors are ALL very colored, especially in the low price range. As a result, they become very personal decisions, because the kind of coloration one person can live with is very different than the kind of coloration someone else can live with. As a result, buying anything like this without spending some serious auditioning time is a very bad idea. I mean, I could tell you what I like at that price range, but you may find it unusable. And I know folks who get good balanced mixes working only with NS-10s, and I'd probably kill myself if I had to listen to those things all day. There are a lot of "boxers vs. tighty whitey" decisions in the monitor world. Some people like one thing, some people like another. Some people take the planar approach and go for thongs, even. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |
