Default Studio monitors - driver replacement

Hi everybody

I have a pair of the Alesis Monitor One, the older type not the MkII,
in my project studio. One of the woofers is distorting a bit at
certain frequencies, propably as a result of listening at high SPL, so
it needs to be replaced. (unless someone can convince me that it can be
repaired!?!?)

The assistant at the local repair shop told me that it would be
neccessary to buy a pair of the woofers as one new woofer would sound
different from the current one. He said they had to be from the same
batch although they were not paired!!!!

That is exactly what puzzles me. Do the Thiele-Small parameters change
that much from a batch to batch? If they do, then a one pair of
speakers will sound very different from another as they are of the same
volume and with same size of the reflex port, or are they tuned by
hand?

Has someone experience with this?

Happy Holidays!

Makes sense. It might be repairable, but it's probably a lot more money
than replacing it.

That also makes sense. If you have one woofer damaged, odds are the
other woofer isn't in very good shape either. Replacing both of them
will give you better match and probably save you grief in the future
too.

Using two from the same batch is always a good idea although probably
not really necessary.

Depends on the driver. There are drivers that are extremely consistent
from batch to batch, and there are some that vary widely. On the whole,
the more you pay, the more consistent they will be.

But I can tell you that an old driver that has been abused won't match
a new one.

Also note that with a lot of inexpensive speakers, manufacturers will
change drivers completely between production runs. They do this because
they get a good deal from one OEM or another. You don't want to have
a mismatched pair of drivers like this.

Has someone experience with this?

Just replace both woofers.

A good repair person would never accept one speaker, especially for a monitor.
Even if only one speaker is fixed, both speakers need to be listened to and compared.
Time consuming, but necessary. A speaker needs to be listened to anyway
after being repaired.

Default Studio monitors - driver replacement

One month ago I bought a pair of active Alesis Monitor One to change the
chinese tweeter and woofer and try to make them sound better.... It is just
an experiment since it is my 5th pair of speakers (I'd like to carry them on
the road to monitor my live recordings, I currently use headphones).
Unfortunately both drivers are both screwed on the "wood" and hard glued
too!! The "wood" is so horrible and soft that when you try to take the
drivers off it breaks in pieces! No way for me to change the woofer and
tweeter without damaging the cabinet in a bad way....
Any suggestions?
F.
