Default MDF board screws?

Hi. When putting together a box, I guess I can use drywall screws? Do I
need to drill thin holes first?

Drill, and countersink bit to recess the screw head. Steady hands and
practice on some glued-up scrap to get the hang of it.

ABSOLUTELY !

It's a very good idea to drill pilot holes, especially in particle or MDF
board. Just like Garrett suggested.

I have been using screw guns and drilling into various types of wood for
about 30 years, ( and have recently begun building my own enclosures from
MDF. Matter of fact, I just finished a "different" ported/slotted/baffled
design that *I* think was wildly successful from the sound of it.), and it's
usually a good idea to predrill your hole. You could split the wood, break a
screw off, or have something else nasty happen.

I use ugly #6 X 1½ screws myself. Cheap Wal-Mart specials. Box of 500. :-)

Don't forget the wood glue and caulking ! I use foam weather stripping under
my speakers. Cheap by the 17' roll.
