Hi,

Is there an audio editor available that will enable me to adjust left
and right channel volumes seperately? I have been transfering some old
cassette tapes to CD and have noticed that some of the tapes are a bit
down on one side and I'd like to bring the levels more equal.

Almost any will let you adjust balance, which comes out to the same
thing. Sonar (and I suspect most) will also let you just record the
stereo signal to two mono tracks and then adjust/manipulate them
independently as needed.

What software are you using now?
Most editing sofware allows you do adjust this.

Quite a few. GoldWave and Audition, among others.

You may find that it would be best to leave it well enough alone.
Sometimes when I record tape to digital, I've adjusted the amplitudes to
even out, but on listening found that the channel that was weaker before
now over-powers the other channel. This, despite both channels being the
same level. Probably due some off kilter phase characteristics of the
recording etc.

Give it a good listen first before you commit the change.

I wish you had quoted more, anyway most cartridges have a channel
balance issue, say a dB, as has most preamps, so the first 2 db of
imbalance is easily accounted for. As I recall this issue it was about
vinyl transfers.

How do you define "even out"?

This, despite both channels being the same level. Probably due
some off kilter phase characteristics of the
recording etc.

Most of the time the "same level" is about same average level, but some
of the time very transient instruments in one channel off-set the
perception, so if all else fails: listen. That said, it is actually
quite easy to estimate channel balance by simply looking at the
graphical display of the curve form.

Give it a good listen first before you commit the change.

Always listen, also if it is a cartridge or riaa preamp issue it will be
the same difference all the time. I can only remember one vinyl record
in my collection that has a serious general imbalance.

Phase is not likely to be an issue in this perception context.
