Portable recorder Zoom H2 vs. Olympus ds-40
If you were to buy a portable recorder to be used mainly for taking down
personal notes, but sometimes also for recording conversations and lectures and perhaps the odd time to do some field recording and the recording of musical concerts, would you go with the Zoom H2($199): http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/h2/ or the Olympus ds-40($150): http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_se...p?product=1277. I'm thinking I should go with the Zoom H2. I was concerned at first that it didn't have voice activation, but it can be set to record automatically when audio is detected. Although it costs around $50 more than the Olympus digital voice recorder I think it might be more versatile and give better recordings. Marc |

I'm thinking I should go with the Zoom H2. I was concerned at first that it didn't have voice activation, but it can be set to record automatically when audio is detected. Not to mention the "pre-record" feature where you can grab the previous 2 seconds that you would have missed otherwise. Although it costs around $50 more than the Olympus digital voice recorder I think it might be more versatile and give better recordings. IMHO, it isn't even a horse race. The Olympus is comparatively overpriced and under-featured, while the Zoom is a remarkable deal. This is partly because those voice-recorders are rather a shrinking-market, dying breed compared to the all the hot, new portable music recorders. Although, to their credit, it looks like Olympus at least made an effort to capture some of the music recording market with the DS-40. But the limited (i.e. none) options for recording format (WMV only) and the non-replaceable, built in, smallish (512MB) memory make it a rather poor competition to the Zoom if you have much interest in music recording. The only advantage the Olympus has is that it is physically smaller (for slipping in your shirt pocket, etc.) |
