I need a preamp/eq
for my classical guitar. I have a passive pickup and I usually use a fire eye red eye. It sounds the best of anything I've used, but often I find myself needing more control over the sound before it gets to the FOH. Often I find myself needing volume control as well. I have a small preamp module from Pendulum that plugs into the endpin and takes 48v and has a volume knob. It works wonderfully. So lately I've been traveling with that and giving the xlr to the FOH guy. The problem is getting the necessary eq correct.. I know how to communicate about eq and that's what I do, but it is still so difficult to get what I need and it would be so easy if I could just twist a few knobs myself and there it is.
The problem is that I need it very portable. I cannot take a full rack unit. a pair of half rack units, like the speck, is too much. I need as small as possible. A single half rack unit would be ideal but i don't know of something that has a mic preamp and eq in that size. preferably with an internal universal power supply! I asked Mark McQ about it a few years ago and he said he might be persuaded to make something like that but didn't have the time. Grace came out with a pedal thing that would work except it's 2 channel and fairly large for a pedal thing. It's probably the closest to what i am looking for though. They have a single channel thing that is perfect except it doesn't have a mic preamp/48v. What I REALLY want is something like the speck eq and the same size but also has a mic pre. Do you all know of anything? thanks! N |

How about arming yourself with enough cables so that you can patch your EQ into the house console in line with the guitar channel, and do that before the show. Take your guitar back to the console where you can hear what it sounds like in the hall, unplug the snake from the guitar channel, plug your guitar in in its place, adjust the EQ so you like it, and leave it that way. Then plug the snake back in, plug it in back at the stage, and you're ready to do. You'll have the volume control with you to make that adjustment as needed. You might have to get creative since you won't always know what console will be in place. Simplest is the common TRS jack with the input and output on a single cable, but you might need to use an auxiliary send out of the guitar (input) channel to feed the EQ, then feed the EQ output to another channel. I'll bet there's a half-rack sized "channel strip" with an EQ and preamp somewhere, but I can't think of one right off, and I know it would have to be a good one to make you happy. NAMM is coming up in a couple of months. Maybe what you need will be there. -- For a good time, call http://mikeriversaudio.wordpress.com |

Grace Designs has a new instrument preamp called the FELIX that may be what you're looking for. looks like it was designed by someone who read your message.

Getting it in the ballpark is about the best one can hope for in a large venue, and even setting levels can be tricky when the number of people in the audience changes. But, if you must have an on-board EQ, I'd look into some of the options for your setup like: http://www.gracedesign.com/products/alix/alix.htm Looks fairly portable to me. -- best regards, Neil |
