Default car battery

I was testing my cd player and I guess I left the battery on too long
cause now I cant start up my car. the lights all come on and everything
electrical works. I went to try and jump start my car but it wasnt
doing anything. I went to check the battery connections and thats when
I noticed that the battery was leaking from the top. Is my battery
messed up?

Did you nitice if the battery was hot? Sounds like a boil over due to a
shorted plate. If that is the case then yeah, its messed up.

Interstate Batteries sells Optimas. Hmmm..... That just strikes me as
funny.

I don't know what city you are in. But in my city there is a place called
"Interstate Batteries", They sell used Optima Yellow tops for $60.00.

Back in the day, in the world of car audio, the big decision with batteries
was whether to buy an Interstate battery or an Optima battery. They were
HUGE competitors. I understand that we are talking about a DIFFERENT
Interstate Batteries here, but I just thought it was funny. Actually, it's
not really that funny and perhaps was not worth a post in the first place
.

Interstate used to have identical batteries as the Optima. It just had
an "Interstate Batteries" sticker on the top. I had a red top IB branded
one in my Tahoe for a while before I got my Optima yellow top. Stunned
the hell out of the guy at the IB store when he came out and looked
after not believing me.

That's interesting. I have seen a few batteries that clearly are Optima
knock-offs (perhaps even made by Optima), but I had no idea that Interstate
made one, too. I guess the sealed, spiral-cell concept proved superior to
all other designs in the end. But back in the early 90's, Interstate
batteries were the ONES TO HAVE!

The best battery that I have ever owned was a diehard ( just a normal car
battery), it lasted 8 years 5 of which I kicked the **** out of it with a
800watt PPI amp. Not sure about the USA, but optimas have a ****ty over the
counter warranty in Canada and their pro-rated wattanty is $14 (yellow top) a
month. When I talked to the distributor they said the pro-rated was much
higher on the yellow top then any of their other batteries because people
abuse them with car stereos.Yet if you ever been to Optimas website, they
advertise the yellow tops for car audio use. Optima warranties the yellow tops
12 Months Free Repacement, Remaining 12 Months Prorated for $250CND. While the
Orbital 34xcd has better specs and a warranty of 18-month free replacement
warranty and a 3-year pro-rated warranty for $180CND. My choice is simple.

Well, I don't know about the warranty as my Yellow-top is going STRONG after
5 years. I love this battery! And I've NEVER heard of anyone having
problems with their Optima. I had owned a red-top Optima before (for my '95
Maxima which I sold with the car) and that battery worked PERFECTLY as well
for 5+ years. Frankly, it didn't even occur to me to buy a warranty. IMHO,
it's a little like buying a warranty on a hammer, it just never occurred to
me it would break.

I usually grab the 40 dollar special at the discount store. Most of
the time it lasts longer than the car. I have seen no problem with the
current no name battery I have. It did have a problem with slow
starting a while back, but I filled it back up with water, now its
fine...

How do you "abuse" a Yellow-top with a car stereo? It's a deep cycle
battery. How can being used in golf-carts (being charged and discharged
over and over and over) be any worse than being used in a high-power car
stereo set-up? That doesn't make any sense to me.

I'm totally with you on that one. but this is what they said. That's like
buying a hammer and voiding the warranty because you hammer nails with it. If
you checkout Optimas website you'll see that if you dont connect the battery
to their liking your warranty drops down to 1 month.

Well, in fairness my hammer analogy is not a good one. I'm sure you CAN
damage a yellow-top if you connect it incorrectly, so I can understand why
Optima would want that caveat in the warranty.

You know, now that I think about it, what that guy said makes some sense.
If you think about all the "kids" who buy Optima Yellow-Tops for their
stereos and start connecting this and that to it (amps, fuses,
cuircuit-breakers, etc.), the chance that a postive will be connected to a
ground or vice-versa is probably pretty high. This may be why Yellow-tops
have a higher than average "breakage" rate.

Well in the hammer analogy, it would like using a small finishing hammer
to drive cabin spikes... yeah, you're probably gonna break it, and no,
it probably shouldn't be covered under warranty.
