Default restore an lcd?

Thanks for the responses. Since the problem -- loss of characters, not
simply contrast -- has occurred with both phones in this set, I think
I'll go with the replacement option. I'm not averse to opening the
phones up and trying to clean the contacts, but since that action has
several possible outcomes, most of which are bad, I think discretion
will be the better part of valor here.
