Default DIY Stereo Monitors...

Seeing the prices of good quality stereo monitors, like the Merlin TSM
for example, put me in mind of building a pair myself, based either on a
complete kit or on sonically proven DIY plans. To be perfectly clear: I
am not interested in building merely a good monitor, but in building a
great monitor: top quality drivers and crossover components, response to
50Hz or there abouts, probably acoustic suspension, reasonable
efficienty (85db?), tonal neutrality (a la the KEF 101) and absolute
transparency for superb imaging, with a parts price point of say ~$1000.
This will perhaps not buy me the quality of a JM Labs MiniUtopia, but
perhaps come close?

Suggestions for projects, parts, kits, etc., will be most appreciated.
