Default speaker amp problem

When I start my reciever I get power to only one of the main speakers
..If I adjust the balance so that only the speaker without sound is on
and blast the volumne the speaker comes on. If I use aux speakers using
the same reciever, I always get both speakers. Any clues or fixes?
Thanks

Speaker selector switch and/or speaker protection relay(s).
Have them cleaned or replaced.
