Last point, creep. I have never visited the musician boards, directly. If I
ever
have a question about musicians or playing, maybe I will. HOWEVER, I do
have in

"rec.audio.pro" newsgroup, which is where I'm responding from as I write

I'm responding to your post, which I see is cross posted to several
groups. If
you don't want my posts to show up on your group, sign on to the
"rec.audio.pro" group, and write to me from there. Are you sure you're a
musician? Do you qualify to be alive? Prove it. Is it true what that other

I saw that Brit Blues thang. You are right on.
Don't worry about clowns like "Flamenco Skip" Rob Schuh can tell you
just how much of a musician he is!

As for the nostagia producer choice thing. I can understand Don
Everly's attitude. It's real easy for a musician who had a big hit and
has slipped in popular appeal to get some of the PBS producers to pull
up the milking stool to nostalgia as a cash cow like PBS does.

Sure making money to live is OK and probably beats the Holiday Inn
lounges all to hell. BUT.

Take a guy like Satchmo. The guy not only stayed as current as
yesterday to his last breath but also never "played it just like it was
on the (hit) record". And even further he didn't need a bunch of new
"songs" to make hits. he would take any old standard and use his talent
to turn it into a smash. To me THAT is where it's at. I HATE cover
stuff. Even if you are exploiting yourself.

Next time you're in Boise ID, hit the Holiday Inn and see if you can
keep up with the players. I already know the answer to that one. You
could no more hold down a Holiday Inn gig than you could cut tracks
alongside Springsteen. The only thing keeping you from being a legend in

Benj, have you ever played with Schuh? Have you ever met him, face to face?
I know neither of you've ever met me, let alone heard me play (you'd never
say something like that to my face, especially if you'd heard me play), so I
don't see how you can pass judgment on my abilities.

If you actually knew anything about Louis Armstrong (who calls him "Satchmo"
anymore? Not musicians), you wouldn't be making such sweeping
generalizations about him. Not that you don't have a right to your opinion,
as long as you remember that it's just your opinion; however ill-informed.

It doesn't surprise me that you, Schuh, and this Allan get along so well.

As a first generation rocker, I'm also a big fan of McCartney's and most other
first generation rockers. It was great to do shows with Chuck Berry, Jack
Scott, The Ventures, Tommy Roe, but I guess you had to be there. It was cool to
sing at Ryman's Grand Old Opry as a guest of Marty Robbin's, and it was nice to

So you had a pretty average career working with "slightly" better than
average talent
why the bitterness?
If you can't see where "Incident on 57th street" or "Spirits in the Night"
and "for you" evokes all the passion and imagery , easily comparable to
"el Paso' and FAR outstripping that"pink carnation" crap MR put out
Oh and Tommy roe, a Humperdink wanna be, LOL
Did chuck ever pay his keyboard player for writing his guitar parts,
last I heard , NO.
sorry you hate music
I happen to love CB, MR Bruce, bob, the cars, rage against the machine,
tom waite, doc Watson, and walter carlos as well as thousands of others

Don explained well from BOTH points of view. In the interview, he even
mentioned going to see Little Richard and wanting to hear him play
"Tutti Frutti" or whatever...the hits.

It's the Ricky Nelson "Garden Party" thing. Sure, as a musician you
might want to play only new and interesting stuff, "please yourself".
But if you've had a career with any length, a good number of the folks
who are coming to see you are *paying* to hear some of the songs that
helped you to be a musician with a career of any length.

Whatsisname from Steppenwolf put it real well in an interview I saw on
the television machine. As a player, he was tired of playing "Born to
be Wild" night after night, but the people who are coming to the shows
don't hear him play it night after night; they are there *that* night,
and they came at least in part to hear that song, and so he puts his
all into it...night after night. And that ain't such a bad thing.

The Stones have to straddle that problem, big time. They could easily
do a 2+ hour greatest hits show, and barely make it into their 1970's
catalog. How the hell can they do a show that pleases old fans who
don't want to hear anything post-Exile, younger fans who don't want to
hear anything pre-Some Girls, and still play a few toons from their
latest offering? And will someone PLEASE help Keef get them fishing
lures out of his hair? Poor guy.

Trivia note: a video of Barry McGuire performing on Hullabaloo, circa
1965, has him doing live vocals to pre-recorded instruments.

Also rather a bizarre setting-- junked cars and dancers in black. What
weirded out era. Love it.

Even more weirded out: the Mamas and the Papas, totally lip-synched,
with go-go dancers popping out of bathtubs to do this very strange
motion like batting away attacking flying ferrets while waxing a car
with your butt.

What demented studio executive blessed this concept?

Doc rocks.

He does, but the original quote (which has been attributed to everyone from
Doc to Louis Armstrong) came from Big Bill Broonzy. Asked whether blues was
folk music he said, "It must be folk music. I never heard no horses play
it." According to Sam Hinton, this was one of his favorite lines in the late
40s - early 50s.

Peace,
Paul

I think the expectation that the performance must match the CD

is
too great, and the artists and their management don't want to
wedge their CD sales.

I have always ascribed to the same philosophy the Allman

Brothers
Band allways had and that is "Do only in the studio what you

can do
live."

I used to ascribe to that philosohy as well. The thing is use

as an
example The Beatles Sgt. Pepper album. No way on Gods green

earth four
guys are gonna pull that off live. I think what we have is two
different approches here. When in the studio play what is best

for
the song not whether or not you can pull it off live. When

playing
live make the nessesary adjustments to pull it off live. A few

subtle
changes here and there will make it possible to pull off the

studio
tune live. Of course you won't get all the nuances or

instrmentation
of the studio version but, a great musician will make do just

fine.

There is room for all kinds of live performances. As another

poster
suggested, adding musicians if a possibility.

Lets say I want to go see my favorite power trio Kings X. I don't

want
to see them with more musicians. I want to see them pull off their
huge three part harmonies, thick guitar parts ,monster bass sound
along with their complex yet melodic melodies as a three piece live
while matching their studio stuff in the process. They do suceed

as
well as they are brilliant musicians.

Some acts actually do gigs
which are 'enhanced' versions of music they've recorded. Elton

John, and
the numerous shows he's done with full symphonic backing, comes to

mind.
Sequencing (some) keyboard parts and playing along with...is that

considered
'cheating' by purists?

IMHO sequencing is cheating. It is no different than playing to

tapes.

Some studio complex tracks sound great when
'stripped down' to play out, like in the 'Unplugged' series;

except with
no
acoustic restriction. It depends on musicianship and the song. I

don't
want to hear vocal backing tracks of any kind, myself...but that's

just
me.
If you need additional voices, hire 'em.

I say if you need voices sing them yourself if possible. I am with

you
on the backing tracks.

I agree, however that recording any kind of 'lead'--be it vocal or
instrumental--and passing it off as live is cheating...actually

passing
*anything* off as live is cheating. Deception sucks.

Yep.

Regards
Mike
